Bryson DeChambeau’s equipment is under the spotlight once again.

The LIV golfer, who has enjoyed an impressive recent run in the major championships, came away from his tied second finish wondering what could have been at Quail Hollow.

Although he was only beaten by Scottie Scheffler at the PGA Championship, DeChambeau ended up five shots behind him, after a final round of 70 that never quite sparked into life.

Following his round, the 31-year-old mused that he feels he left up to a dozen shots out on the course. But, he then went on to tease a potential equipment change that could come soon.

DeChambeau explained that he thinks his wedge play could be tighter, if he used a ball that doesn’t curve as much at his high speeds.

“What I really think needs to happen, being pretty transparent here, is just get a golf ball that flies a little straighter,” DeChambeau said after his final round.

“Everybody talks about how straight the golf ball flies. Well, upwards of 190 (mph ball speed) like Rory and myself, it’s actually quite difficult to control the golf ball.

“The ball sidespins quite a bit and it gets hit by the wind quite a bit because our golf balls are just longer in the air. So I’m looking at ways of how to rectify that so that my wedges can be even tighter so it can fly straighter.

“I feel like there are times where I hit wedges and it just over curves, depending how high and how much time it is in the air and how much spin is on the ball.”

DeChambeau, who carries a mixed and unusual bag of equipment, went onto say that he’s hoping to have figured something out before the US Open, where he’ll defend his title. That event takes place at Oakmont in less than a month, starting on 12 June.

It’s an interesting theory from DeChambeau, who currently uses a Titleist Pro V1x 2025 model.

Clearly, hitting drivers at high speed isn’t an issue with his ball, but controlling distance on approach shots seems to be a problem for the 2024 US Open champion. Whether that is down to the golf ball, another aspect of his equipment, or DeChambeau himself, is up for debate. It seems that he will be searching for answers when it comes to his golf ball, however.

It’s a part of his equipment that has changed plenty of times in recent years. Back in 2022, DeChambeau used a Bridgestone model, before switching to a Titleist Pro V1x Left Dash. Then, when Titleist launched the new line of Pro V1 balls, he switched into the new Pro V1x.

Could yet another change be in the offing? We’ll keep a close eye on what Bryson tees up when he reaches Oakmont.
