The FootJoy Legends Series range is growing. The third drop, the Packard Liberty, celebrates the fact that FootJoy has been the most popular shoe amongst professionals for the past 80 years.

Since 1945, when golf shoe usage started to be tracked on tour, FootJoy has been the most worn golf shoe on professional tours.

It all started, FootJoy say, in 1927, when a rep by the name of Miles Baker convinced the captain of the US Ryder Cup team that his players should be wearing FootJoy shoes.

It worked, as the US team, wearing FJ shoes, cruised to a seven point victory. Johnny Farrell, a member of the victorious team, wore those FootJoy shoes in a 36-hole play-off at the following year’s US Open.

Word spread amongst fellow professionals and before long, the brand was the most popular among golfers. That’s still the case to this day and has been each year.

To celebrate, FootJoy launched the Packard Liberty shoe, just in time for this week’s US Open at Oakmont. These feature elevated navy and red accents, including a red “1945” on the midsole that celebrates the beginning of FootJoy’s success.

The Packard shoe is one of the most popular in FootJoy’s line and it’s no surprise. Although the shoe looks great, it also performs incredibly well on the course.

These shoes are supercharged inside and out, with a firmer density cup around the heel. This provides stability through the swing.

Underfoot, there’s Pulsar Softspikes (gold ones in this shoe) which provide 360-degrees of traction. These provide a defence from swing forces, keeping your feet firmly planted in the ground.

“Ever since I wore my father’s hand-me-down white FJ Classics wingtips for junior golf, I’ve literally never worn another golf shoe in my life,” said Adam Scott.

“I truly believe they’re just the best looking. Best performance and best looking.”
