Like many golfers, Neil Hallyburton has a passion for playing as many courses as he can.
Neil has travelled around, racking up famous tracks and hidden gems, while also keeping in touch with others who were doing the same thing.
But one thing kept coming up when he asked how people were tracking their progress.
Neil, who heads up IT at the Old Course Hotel in St Andrews, said: “There’s a lot of people trying to complete all the golf courses across Scotland and when you ask them, ‘are you actually keeping track of that?’ they all say the same thing – it’s on a spreadsheet.”
That gave Neil the idea of developing an efficient way of recording your progress around the world’s courses.
The result was FlagMyGolf, an app that costs just £1.99 to download and lets you track the courses you’re playing while comparing your progress with others.
Neil continued: “It’s designed to replace spreadsheets and other manual tracking methods with a simple, digital solution that keeps everything in one place.”
But there’s even more to it than that.
More than 32,000 courses covered

FlagMyGolf covers more than 32,000 courses across 132 countries. So if you’ve played it then it’s likely it’s on the app.
Nearly every course is covered in major golfing destinations like the U.S., Scotland, Ireland, and South Africa. But Neil is still adding to it and plans to add any missing courses over time. At the moment he is tracing private courses in Canada.
He said: “According to my research, there are about 38,000 golf courses worldwide, and FlagMyGolf has already mapped over 32,500 of them. That’s an incredible resource for any golfer.”
Features help you track your golfing journey with ease

Golfers can use the app to log the courses they’ve played while also creating a bucket list of those they want to add to their resume.
The countries you’ve covered will be listed and also flagged on the app’s own global map. On top of that you can see the percentage of each continent’s courses that you’ve played. You can search for courses by country, to allow you to see courses you may want to play in the future.
A newly added feature lists the top 100 golf courses worldwide, encouraging golfers to tick off iconic venues. There are plans to add a top 100 for each country.
Neil said: “Golfers love a challenge, so I added a feature where they can see the top 100 courses globally and mark off the ones they’ve played—it’s a great incentive to travel and experience new courses.”
Another fun feature of FlagMyGolf is the ability to earn points for each course played and unlock achievements as you go along. Just a few of the accolades you can rack up include “elite”, “legendary”, “champion” and “king golfer”, as well as “country hopper”, “globe trotter” and “world traveller”.
There are also leaderboards so you can compare your progress with others. These allow you to see where you stand in both a national and global league, while you can also create your own private competitions with pals.
Neil added: “It’s not just about tracking where you’ve played. It’s about challenging yourself and your friends to play more courses and climb the leaderboards.”
It’s only going to get better
While FlagMyGolf already offers a huge range of options for the enthusiast, Neil plans to add yet more benefits over time.
There is already an incentive for completing the global top 100, but Neil is working on adding ones for each country.
Another possibility is to link each course to its website and booking system to ease the process of teeing it up.
Neil may also explore the possibility of a subscription model which can unlock premium benefits and he may look at tie-ins with the big name brands of the game.
Neil concluded: “We’ve got a lot of people signed up already and great feedback. So, it’s only going to get better.”
