The TaylorMade P790 and the Mizuno JPX 925 Forged irons are two hugely popular players' distance irons, but how do they compare?
TaylorMade's P790 range has been hugely popular due to its versatility, forgiveness and speed qualities,
Meanwhile, anyone who has used a Mizuno iron in the past will know how great they feel and the JPX 925 Forged range is no different.
Both of these irons fall in to the players' distance category, but both have different technologies that will appeal to different golfers.
Let's see how they differ and which of the TaylorMade P790 irons or Mizuno JPX 925 Forged irons you should be using.

PROS
- A 24% larger sweet spot means more forgiveness and faster ball speeds
- New improved looks
- SpeedFoam Air fills the hollow body for a responsive feel
- CG is lower in long irons for easier launch and playability
- FLTD CG technology has each iron individually optimised for consistency and performance
CONS
- None that we can find!
Let's take a look at some of the key technologies in the TaylorMade P790 2025 irons.
One of the key additions to this new TaylorMade P790 range is the new face material. This all-new P790 uses a new forged face material, the 4340M. This material is 20% stronger, allowing engineers to design the face thinner and faster than previous models.
When compared to the previous model of P790 irons, the use of a 4340M material created a 24% larger sweetspot for a more consistent distance from the top of the set to the bottom. These are also some of the most stable irons TaylorMade has ever made. That’s due to strategic repositioning of up to 40g of tungsten internally, and FLTD CG that positions the centre of gravity lowest in long irons for easier launch and playability, and progressively higher in the shorter irons for precise spin, distance and trajectory control.
Tungsten weighting has been moved lower in the long irons, lowering the centre of gravity. As the set progresses up through the 7-iron, the tungsten weight shifts closer to the toe. This increases both stability and MOI in the middle of the set, further enhancing forgiveness and delivering consistent distance and overall performance. Tungsten isn’t found in the 8-iron through pitching wedge, allowing the centre of gravity to sit higher in the head where it enhances control.
You still have the Thick-Thin Back Wall Construction which has the honeycombed cutouts across the internal back wall to remove excess weight. This allows engineers to strategically position more weight lower in the clubhead to achieve consistent performance. The Thru-Slot Speed Pocket is also found in the 4-7 irons. This is where most mishits occur and protects ball speeds, which ultimately translates to consistent distance. The classic SpeedFoam Air fills the hollow body construction of P790 irons further ensuring that crisp feel.

PROS
- I mean, just look at them!
- Absolutely superb feel and audio when you strike these from the middle
- Two colour choices, black and silver, something we don't see often
- Impressive progress in design from Mizuno helps these to perform well
CONS
- It's not huge upgrades from previous generations, but these were already great
Let’s take a look at some of the key technologies in the Mizuno JPX 925 Forged range of irons.
The Mizuno JPX925 Forged features the Contour Ellipse Face. An advanced multi-thickness face profile optimises ball speed across the whole face, giving impressive ball speed even on mishits.
In these irons, Mizuno employs its Grain Flow Forged HD process. The long irons (4-7) in the JPX 925 Forged series are crafted from Chromoly 4120, a material known for its exceptional strength and malleability, enabling higher ball speeds and easier adjustability. While this still feels great, emphasis is placed on performance, particularly in clubs that are more likely to be mishit.
The shorter irons (8-GW) are forged from 1025E Pure Select Mild Carbon Steel, a material that delivers superior control, precision, and the legendary buttery feel Mizuno players expect. Together, these materials ensure a flawless transition through the set, offering the perfect balance of speed, precision, and feedback. This is a key part of the design of these irons, which improves turf interaction. The leading edge is gently bevelled for a clean entry into the turf, while a hard-cut trailing edge allows for a smooth exit for superior uninterrupted ball contact.
Conclusion - TaylorMade P790 irons v Mizuno JPX 925 Forged irons
Both of these irons are brilliant but when comparing them, there was one thing that stood out most to me.
• Review: FootJoy HyperFlex golf shoes
• Should you use a 3-wood or a mini driver?
With the Mizuno JPX 925 Forged, the feel and consistency you have is brilliant, but the turf interaction is impressive with the leading edge and sole design. If you have a steep angle of attack and dig at the ball, it cuts through the turf and doesn't allow divots to be too deep. The speeds and distances are impressive, and the looks don't disappoint.
With the TaylorMade P790 irons, the ball speeds are brilliant, especially with that bigger sweet spot, it makes those mishits even more consistent and forgiving across the face. In the longer irons, the ball speeds are slightly higher, and there is a touch more spin in the scoring irons.
• I shocked a Scotty Cameron fitter by doing something even the pros can’t manage
Looks wise, they are both great to look at, but the feeling at impact is slightly different. The P790 has a larger hollow body design, which is a little duller and softer in feel.
The Mizuno JPX 925 Forged has that classic Mizuno feel but has just that touch more responsiveness, which is great if you like shape shots.
Two great offerings that are a must-try if you're in the market for a player's distance iron.
