Zero torque putters are hitting the market in big numbers, with plenty of brands releasing a version of the club.
TaylorMade and Callaway are among the big hitters releasing their zero torque putters. Both are promising golfers the chance to hole more putts, thanks to clubs that don't twist through the putting stroke.
But how does the TaylorMade ZT Spider putter compare to the Odyssey Square 2 Square Max putter? We put them head to head to see how they differ.

PROS
- High 6,300 MOI which is stable on mishits
- Feels great off the face
- Well weighted and balanced
- Two alignment options
CONS
- 3.3 degree of onset may not suit everyone's eye at address
With an MOI of over 6,300, the new Odyssey Square 2 Square Max putter is the most stable offerings in the Square 2 Square range.
There are two options available in the Max range, the Max features a simple sight line, while the Max Stripe features Odyssey’s bold Versa 90 alignment to help you aim and give you clear visuals.
The Ai-One insert is designed using artificial intelligence to help with mishits and get you closer to the hole. The urethane insert gives you that white hot feel and consistent roll that screams classic odyssey.
The balance of the CG in the putter is what helps you to keep the face square throughout your stroke. This results in putters that sits with the toe up in a reverse torque position.
Where the shaft is positioned, it has 3.3° of forward shaft lean to help pre-set the hands in a forward press position, eliminating the opening of the face.
The SL 90/140 and 180 shafts are different shafts for different configurations, providing the proper weight and balance to complement the different head weights and lengths that are offered.

PROS
- 5K MOI makes this putter forgiving and stable
- Only 1 degree of onset which feels like a regular putter
- Milled Clear Path Alignment
- Great consistency and feel off the face
CONS
- Hard to fault this design, it's very good
The new TaylorMade Spider ZT is TaylorMade’s first zero torque putter but it’s also the most stable Spider model in TaylorMade's flagship putter range.
It has a stainless-steel face and aluminium body and a lot of perimeter weighting to give you the most stability possible through your putting stroke.
With 5K MOI the Spider ZT is not only designed for stability and forgiveness but keeping the face square throughout the stroke. With only one degree of onset, compared to around three degrees that you see in other brands it’s not as aggressive and angled.
Instead of more an angled or aggressive shaft angle, TaylorMade engineers have used triangulated weights to create their toe-up design.
The TSS weighting on the sole triangulates the centre of gravity for a toe-up design.
A milled Pure Roll insert delivers the consistency, feel and distance control and with the high MOI.
TaylorMade Spider ZT putter v Odyssey Square 2 Square Max putter: Conclusion
Both of these putters are very good zero torque designs but there are some visual differences that will fit the eye of each golfer differently.
The head shape of the Odyssey is larger, but it is really well balanced. With two options of alignment - the Max Stripe with the Versa alignment and Max with the white alignment line - they both look very clean in shape and at address.
The TaylorMade Spider ZT looks a bit different from the average Spider shape. It’s squarer in design, but that is what allows the weighting to be pushed to the perimeter, giving you the most stability. The clear path alignment and milling look great, but it is also noticeable that the shaft angle isn't as sharply forward.
• Are zero torque putters the answer to your struggles?
Both putters feel great with a classic White Hot feel in the Odyssey and a great feel from the Pure Roll insert in the TaylorMade.
There is a difference in MOI with the Oydssey Square 2 Square Max - 6,300 to the TaylorMade Spider ZT’s 5,000 MOI - but it will be hard to tell which one is the most forgiving.
What this head to head will come down to is the looks at address. The TaylorMade is very subtle and feels like another putter with a centre shaft in because of its one degree on shaft onset. This will be easy to step into for a lot of golfers. With 3.3 degree the Callaway Square to Square Max, it is more noticeable in comparison and makes you feel like you’re in more of a forward press starting position.
These are both great putters if you struggle getting the ball rolling on your start line and both are packed full of stability and forgiveness.
