Mizuno S5 wedges

Launched alongside the two MP-iron models were the new S5 wedges that Mizuno says feature a little bit of ‘Blue Magic’.

This is down to the new Blue IP finish Mizuno has installed into the line that it hopes will make it stand out on the course and the shelf. It has been created to continue the brand’s connection to the colour blue, something it is already synonymous with and previously featured on the crown of the JPX850 driver released at the start of this year. It is also available in a White Satin finish for players who prefer a more traditional appearance.

Offering ‘unprecedented levels of greenside performance’, they both look great and perform great, too, giving the perfect blend of feel, control and workability. The biggest compliment paid to them was that Luke Donald put the S5 wedges straight into his bag at the BMW PGA Championships at Wentworth earlier this summer, with the designs made to meet the needs of everyone from the top tour pro to mid-handicapper.

S5-Wedge

“These S5 wedges are more of a midsize profile, so there’s a lot more clubface for fuller shots,” says Chris Voshall, Mizuno club engineer. “They’re less intimidating when you’re faced with 95 yards from a less-than-perfect lie. They went straight into Luke’s bag in May, which suggests we did a pretty good job with the sole grinds and versatility around the greens.”

Mizuno has combined the S5’s attractive profile with highly versatile sole grinds to allow you to use your imagination and be more creative around the greens from a wide variety of lies.

The brand has also been wary of the demands of full-wedge and greenside shots being very different, and that’s why the S5 wedges are designed to give high spin throughout the range. thanks to Quad Cut Grooves, which are CNC-milled after forging. Wider shallower grooves feature in the 54 to 62 degree models, while deeper narrower grooves are milled into the 49 to 53 degree options.
