Mizuno | MP irons

Having provided the benchmark in forged irons for many years, Mizuno has continued to build on its stellar reputation as the premier manufacturer of compact irons with the release of its new MP-5 and MP-25 models.

The current make-up of the irons market sees it dominated by oversized designs built to give more distance at all costs. With its latest MP-series launches, Mizuno has been sure to give the best performance in terms of looks, sound and feel it can produce.

Following on from the success of the JPX 850 Forged irons, Mizuno has installed Boron into its MP line-up for the first time in the MP-25, creating an impressive compact forged iron with the Boron giving more ball speed and distance.

“We started off with a tour-preferred chassis, and developed our technology to get the most ball speed from that size.” Tetsu Kanayama

The MP-25 has been described by Mizuno as the first ‘true high ball-speed’ iron designed specifically for tour players through to low-mid handicap amateurs.

It’s no surprise that, with 30 years experience of Grain Flow Forging already in the bank, Mizuno has used the process to maximum effect for the MP-25 heads. Forged from a single billet of 1025 Boron steel, Boron injection has also allowed a Micro-Slot pocket cavity to be built into the longer irons – from 3-iron to 6-iron – for higher ball speeds while still delivering the feel and touch that tour players look for.

Part of Mizuno’s Japanese R&D team, Tetsu Kanayama said: “We started off with a tour-preferred chassis, and developed our technology to get the most ball speed from that size. The craftsmen at Yoro, Japan kept the CAD engineers on a tight leash, so the final irons were something we could confidently show our tour players.”

Launched alongside the MP-25, the MP-5 is neither a blade nor a cavity design, it is, in fact, a revolutionary ‘Channel Back’ that Mizuno says is ‘a forged iron like no other’.

Created using extensive testing among the brand’s tour staff, these irons have been designed for ultimate feel and workability, and are positioned neatly in Mizuno’s range between the classic MP blades and smaller players’ cavity backs.

The ‘Channel Back’ places weight behind the central impact point to give blade-like feel better players look for, while mass has been relocated to parts of the head to ensure stability and performance are consistent across the face, even on off-centre strikes.

The head itself is larger than a traditional blade, with a slightly thicker top line, but that doesn’t take anything away from the traditional Mizuno appearance that has proved so popular with better players over the years.
