• Nike reveals its newest pair of golf shoes
• Rory McIlroy will wear them at WGC-HSBC Champions
• Inspired by a snowmobile and a trip to the Bahamas
Rory McIlroy is wearing a new pair of Nike Lunar Control Vapor shoes in Shanghai this week inspired by a snowmobile and a trip to the Bahamas.
That’s right. According to Nike, McIlroy headed to the Bahamas for five days in the middle of August with his performance team and saw it as the perfect chance to test the Nike Lunar Control Vapor shoes.
During that testing, McIlroy put the Nike Lunar Control Vapor shoes through their paces in all possible situations on the course. He loved what he found.
“For as long as I can remember, I’ve played golf in spiked footwear, and up until two years ago those spikes were metal,” he said.
“Through its drive to innovate and bring the sport to new places, Nike has created a new traction system that provides me with a stable base to push off the ground and deliver the distance I need off the tee.”
So, we know the role the Bahamas played in the new Nike Lunar Control Vapor shoes, but what about the snowmobile?
That’s where the idea for the new traction system came from. It has been designed to help you push through the swing for more power, while also giving you better balance and keeping you lower to the ground.
You can also see a distinct difference between the white section and black section on the sole. That’s where the unique TPU tread is positioned.
It arrives in the form of a series of tooth-like tracks allowing for more contact points between the shoe and the ground.

Elsewhere in the shoe, the Nike Lunar Control Vapor shoes have a full-length Lunarlon midsole and Nike Flywire.
By combining them with the new traction system, Nike says it helps to keep the foot stable and cushioned through the swing.
It also comes with a two-year waterproof guarantee, perfect for wet conditions.
