Who are they for?

Golfers who want to minimise face rotation in their putter, with more stability in their stroke

bunkered rating

Pros

  • The most stable offering in the Square 2 Square range with a high MOI
  • Great feel off the Ai-One insert
  • Very forgiving on off-centre strikes

  • If you are someone who likes being able to rotate the putter through impact then these won't necessarily be a great option for you

Odyssey has had great success with its Square 2 Square range and has now introduced its latest additions, the Odyssey Ai-One Square 2 Square Max 1 and Max Stripe.

Odyssey say these are the most stable Square 2 Square putters yet, with a shape which may look familiar to some of those in tune with the current putter market.

These putters may remind you of another putter available right now, but you can say the same thing about the fang design which Odyssey created all those years ago which has been adopted by many brands over the years.

Regardless of that, here’s what you can expect from the Odyssey Ai-One Square 2 Square Max line…

The First Look

Both of these putters have a large footprint and they’re centre shafted, as you can see. They also both have the Ai-One insert, which we’ve come to expect from Odyssey putters. While the putters do share similarities, there’s a key difference that you’ll see in the looks.

The Max 1 has a pure navy blue PVD finish with a small white alignment on top in front of the shaft. Meanwhile, the Max Stripe also has the PVD finish with the whole of the centre of the putter blocked off in white, which is the width of a golf ball. This makes it visually easier to line up your putts.

The Tech

With an MOI of over 6,300, these new Max Odyssey Square 2 Square putters are the most stable offerings in the Square 2 Square range.

As I mentioned in the looks section, the Max 1 features a simple sight line in the middle of the design, while the Max Stripe features Odyssey’s bold alignment line using Versa 90 alignment for better aim in your set-up and throughout the stroke.

• Are zero torque putters the answer to your putting woes?

• Should you use a 3-wood or a mini driver?

The Ai-One insert is created with artificial intelligence, which is designed to get your mishits closer to the hole. This design has created contours on the aluminium back of the insert which is then co-moulded to the back of White Hot Urethane striking surface to promote consistent ball speed across the face, while maintaining the classic White Hot feel.

What the centre shaft does is balance the centre of gravity in the putter, helping you to keep the face square to the path. This results in putters that rest with the toe up in a reverse torque position, the opposite of a traditional putter with toe hang.

Where the shaft is positioned it has 3.3° of forward shaft lean to help pre-set the hands in a forward press position, eliminating the opening of the face.

The SL 90/140 and 180 shafts are different shafts for different configurations, providing the proper weight and balance to complement the different head weights and lengths that are offered.

The bunkered Verdict

With a bigger footprint in these Odyssey Ai-One Square 2 Square Max putters, you will feel better stability, especially on miss-struck putts. The one thing I really liked was the balance of the putter and with the larger shape, you feel like you’re going to hit your putts on line every single time.

I’ve been a fan of the Ai-One insert since it came out as it feels great, it’s soft, it’s responsive and has the White-Hot feel, which is classic Odyssey. If I had to choose one, I gravitated more to the Max 1 model as the alignment was more minimalistic, however if you like that bold Versa 90 alignment then the Max Stripe will be a great option to get you hitting your putts on line and holing more putts.

These putters make it very easy to get the ball on line, particularly from short-to-mid range. From longer distances, I found that speed control was helped.

If you’re looking for a putter that will minimise the rotation of the face and that will stay square throughout your stroke, this range is definitely worth trying out.
