Odyssey Square to Square putters review

Odyssey has revealed their brand-new Square to Square putters which are a Stroke Balanced design. We’ve seen similar technology from other brands and it’s proved popular. So, could these be Odyssey’s best ever putters?

I don’t know about you, but I want to hole more putts. If you’re in the same boat as me, then you’ll want to keep reading.

Odyssey has launched a new Odyssey Ai-One Square to Square putter which is going to make your life easier.

You’re probably wondering how. Well, I got my hands on these on a recent trip to La Reserva Club in Sotogrande, and I’ve got all the details.

The First Look

If you’re an Odyssey fan, you’ll be familiar with the looks here. These feature the same PVD finish and are similar in shape to what we have already seen in the Ai One range.

But we only have three models: Double Wide, Jailbird and the #7. The Double Wide is larger in shape than the standard Ai One model, as it’s just a little bit longer in the blade. The shaft on all the putters sits just behind the top line giving it the centre shafted look. The Jailbird has the same alignment finish with the white stripes and three dot centre alignment aid and the #7 has the same alignment aid in that classic fang design.

The Tech

As the name suggests, the Ai-One insert is designed using Artificial Intelligence. This is designed to give you more forgiveness and a better chance of getting the ball to the hole on mishits with the classic White Hot looks and feel.

What’s different is the new design that centers the shaft on the CG plane of the putter. This results in putters that rest with the toe up in a reverse torque position, opposite of a traditional putter with toe hang. This design promotes a square face throughout the stroke and with a 3.3° of forward shaft lean it pre-sets the hands in a forward press position eliminating the opening of the face that often happens when golfer forward press on their own.

There are three head options and also three shaft length options. We’ve got Standard, Cruiser and Broomstick configurations that have the SL 90/140 and 180 shafts for different configurations to provide the proper weight and balance to complement the different head weights and lengths that are offered.

The bunkered Verdict

I think these putters are brilliant and here is why. A really think stroke balanced putters are a game changer, as they’re pretty much idiot proof. These are easy to use and easy to get ball rolling on line with. If you can get more putts on line, you’re going to hole more of them too.

I found it incredibly easy to hole more putts from inside ten feet as it’s so easy to hit it on your start line. The weighting of the Square to Square putters is brilliant, and each model really does feel balanced in your hands. As someone who has moved into a mallet design and is looking for more forgiveness and less face rotation, these are great for me. I love the look of a traditional blade, but I know for me it’s not the best option. However, the new Square to Square Double Wide has the highest MOI out of the three and I found I didn’t want to put down because it was so good and very easy to use. Slightly longer in blade length, almost like an old broom handle head shape, but I thought it was brilliant if you want to play a blade that has zero torque.

Looks is an important point to note in these putters. Other stroke balanced putters might not appeal to everyone when it comes to the aesthetics, but Odyssey make smashing looking putters and these are no different.

There are other brands like L.A.B and PXG who have their own zero torque putters which are very good but are above the £400 mark, unlike the Square to Square of £289. That’s an important point and while £289 is still a lot, it’s more in line with other premium putters.

If you want to make putting easier and give yourself more consistency on the greens, then I’d really recommend you give these putters a shot. The Ai-One range is my favourite from Odyssey and these just provide another option that will really work for a lot of players. I’m a huge fan.
