PXG has broken new ground today, unveiling their first ever mini driver. Say hello to the PXG Secret Weapon.
If you’re an eagle-eyed viewer of the PGA Tour, you might have already spotted this club in the bags of Eric Cole and Jake Knapp, two of PXG’s staffers on tour.
In fact, the club was in the bag when Jake Knapp teamed up with Patty Tavatanakit to win the Grant Thornton Invitational.
And, if you’ve paid attention to PXG’s business in the last year or so, you’ll recognise this as part of the Black Ops family. Saying that, where Black Ops is mentioned on the driver and fairway woods, the words Secret Weapon are in its place. Let’s get into the details.
The first thing I noticed about this on unboxing it was the headcover. I had been told to expect something different here and I certainly found that, with yellow details on the typical PXG design. I’m always a fan of something different here and PXG has certainly done that.
As for the club itself, if you’re a fan of the looks of the PXG Black Ops range, then you’re going to love this too. Behind the ball, you see that carbon fibre crown that PXG lovers will be familiar with, which I think makes this easy on the eye.
On the bottom, there’s four adjustable weights, which make up PXG’s Precision Weighting Technology. Of course, these are here for performance, so while they might not cater to everyone’s needs in terms of looks, they serve a purpose.
Here’s what PXG has to say about the tech in their new Secret Weapon mini driver.
High-Strength Ultra-Thin Titanium Face: Optimised for maximum ball speed and ideal launch conditions.
High-Strength Composite Construction: Ensures durability without sacrificing performance.
Larger Top & Face Profile: Confidence-inspiring face height for easier contact and improved consistency.
Carbon Fibre Crown: Lightweight and strong, contributing to optimal weight distribution.
Precision Weighting Technology: Customisable weight system for tailored ball flight.
Robotic Polishing: Refines the bulge and roll characteristics for consistent performance across the face.
Adjustable Hosel: Allows players to fine-tune loft and lie angles.
There’s no doubt that mini drivers are the in-thing right now, so I’m not one bit shocked to see PXG releasing their own version here. This arrived in the bunkered office recently and I’m really excited to get to hit it.
I’ve currently got PXG Black Ops woods in the bag and I wouldn’t be surprised if this became on option. However, it might be tricky to drop a club, and will very much depend on course conditions.
PXG say that this is going to sit between your driver and fairway wood, something which is certainly appealing for those who might struggle with accuracy with their longer clubs off the tee.
It’s not just an option from the tee, however, as PXG say this will work as an option from the fairway too, ideal for getting home in two on par-5s.
The adjustability is certainly a plus point in this club. Weights on the bottom of the sole – there are two heavy weights and two light weights – can be moved around, while the hosel allows this to play anywhere from 11.5 degrees to 135 degrees.
Overall, I think this will do well for PXG. Clearly, it’s been welcomed on tour and we know that PXG loyal fans will flock to it.
