PXG Sugar Daddy III wedges review

The third iteration of PXG’s Sugar Daddy wedges line-up. These have been popular in the past for good reason, so what’s new in the 2024 range?

There’s no doubt that these wedges are at the premium end of the spectrum when it comes to PXG’s clubs. These are 100% milled wedges and are triple forged. There’s certainly no expense spared.

The First Look

I’m someone who is pretty particular about how I want my wedges to look, so I was delighted when I got my hands on these. Very clean behind the ball and, in particular in the full face grooves in the BP Grind, very confidence inspiring.

On the sole of these, you can see the milling, which I think gives a very premium look to these clubs. The back of these might be a tad busy for some people, but honestly I like it. Even still, behind the ball, which is the important part, there’s nothing wrong with these at all.

The Tech

The all important tech info, straight from PXG…

“Expertly crafted, the PXG Sugar Daddy III wedges are 100% milled wedges and boast a precise construction, an innovative wide groove pattern, and three sole designs to grant ultimate control and accuracy in any playing condition.

“Made from a high-strength 8620 soft carbon steel, PXG Sugar Daddy III Wedges are triple forged. This process creates a tight grain structure that increases the material strength, extends the life of the grooves, and delivers an exceptional feel and appearance. Further refined through the precision milling process, every geometry is produced to exacting specifications for consistent performance today – and when golfers are ready to refresh their set.

“Sugar Daddy III Wedges feature a unique wide groove pattern that gives golfers more control and consistency specific to trajectory and spin. The wide groove logic delivers a groove edge that can engage with the cover of a ball .002” deeper and supports approximately 25% more volume in the cross-sectional areas than competitor narrow groove patterns. The deeper pentation helps improve friction in dry conditions and produce more spin. The wider groove also helps displace water and debris to improve traction and maintain more spin in wet conditions.

“Precision Weighting Technology, located near the centre of gravity on the back of the clubhead, can be adjusted in 2-gram increments during a fitting. This enables golfers to experience various head weight configurations and achieve optimal personalised performance. Weighting is not intended to be adjusted after purchase.”

“From first look, it is obvious that Sugar Daddy III Wedges are something special—the craftsmanship is impeccable. From the first swing, there is no doubt that these babies will get you up and down from any lie and in any condition. They are sweet!”

The bunkered Verdict

I really like these wedges. So much so, in fact, that I’m putting three of them in my bag for the rest of the season.

When I tried these out around the greens for the first time, I was a little low on confidence with my chipping, but these genuinely gave me a boost of confidence in my short game.

In particular, the BP Grind, which features a full face of grooves, is a big change for me, but I love it. This has been made with versatility in mind and I can say for sure that it works from bunkers, thick rough, and when you need to get the ball up in the air quickly and softly.

Precision Weighting Technology is something we also see in these wedges, which, during the fitting process, could be revolutionary. The weight can be changed by fitters, with two gram increments available, which sit behind where you’re going to make contact with the ball. This is designed to only be changed during a custom fitting, but PXG’s fitters certainly know what they’re doing and even a two gram change can make a big difference.

Spin is so important in wedges, and PXG have pulled out all the stops to make sure these wedges perform on that front. On full shots, any new wedges is going to impart plenty spin on the ball, but around the greens, that can be a different story. But, when I was trying these out, I found it so easy to get a lot of spin on even partial shots. Again, the full face grooves and high toe design in the lob wedge really entice you to open the face up and get creative. That’s the club I use most around the greens, so that’s a big tick for me.

I’ve had these in the bag for several rounds now and can safely say it’s the most important upgrade I’ve made to my equipment in a long time. My old wedges were, well, old, so I really wasn’t getting the spin I needed on those all important wedge shots. That’s all changed now.

All in all, I love these wedges. While there is only three grinds to pick from, they’re going to cover virtually ever golfer, especially at club level. For me, they tick all the boxes I need in a set of wedges. I miss plenty of greens(!), so I know they’re going to get plenty of use, something which I’m looking forward to.
