Callaway Opus Wedge review

If you want more spin and lower launch with your wedges you need to check out Callaway’s new Opus wedges.

For a year and a half, Callaway had a prototype wedge on tour, so they could refine what shape the best in the world want around the greens.

This is Callaway’s most tour validated model to date with a new and improved shape, spin gen tech face, as well as an Opus Platinum option.

I’ve always been a fan of Callaway wedges, especially the Jaws Raw line, so these have big shoes to fill. Let’s take a closer look.

The First Look

As I mentioned there is a new shape to these with a slightly raised toe shape, more radius in the leading edge and clean transition from hosel into the leading edge. But the look of these wedges is very clean and they look great behind the ball.

The Tech

The big talking point with this wedge is the Spin Gen face technology.

The new face has an all-new tighter pitch putting more grooves on the face. It also features an offset groove-in-groove that provides spin when opening the face, and a new aggressive face blast provides spin and bite on partial shots. These three elements work in conjunction to provide a crisp, tour-level spin and control.  There is four grind options to choose from which come in the popular S grind, forgiving W, versatile C, and tour-favourite T grind.

The premium offering comes in the shapes of the Opus Platinum wedge. This fuses advancements from metal injection moulding, and tungsten for launch control. MIM construction uses a proprietary blend of metals to precisely dial in performance and feel. By using tungsten high in the topline, Callaway were able to give players a shot that will naturally launch lower providing more control and spin into the green.

The bunkered Verdict

These are spin machines! The spin that these produce is a lot higher than in previous generations and the control around the greens is impressive. Not only do you feel confident on those shorter more awkward shots, the control is just so good off the face.

What I really liked was the launch. It comes out lower, but it’s packed full of spin so you can really get it to stop hard after a few hops. I like being quite creative around the green and let me tell you when you open the face up, the offset groove-in-groove tech is awesome. With Opus Platinum and the tungsten positioned high to lower the launch and improve trajectory, this is something I would look at putting in the bag.

Two amazing wedges that will be in the bags of many pros and plenty of everyday golfers.
