Huawei Watch Ultimate Green Edition review

As golf watches go, you’re going to struggle to find something with more innovation or tech than the Huawei Watch Ultimate Green Edition.

The Chinese technology giant has already made big moves in the TV, phone and tablet industry, to name just a few, and now they’re going big on golf.

Of course, the golf watch market is a big one, and there’s plenty of established golf brands that do a good job of keeping you right from your wrist. So, how does Huawei’s option stack up? Let’s take a closer look.

The First Look

I won’t lie, when I took this out of the box, I was a little concerned about the size of the Huawei Watch Ultimate. For golf, you certainly don’t want something that is bulky on the course. But, when I first got it out, that was not an issue at all. The watch is comfortable to wear and I barely noticed it while I was swinging.

I really like the colour scheme on this watch. Obviously, the green and white isn’t going to appeal to everyone, but you can select from different straps on the Ultimate Green Edition.

Huawei home screen
It’s clear this watch is made with golf in mind as soon as you switch it on.

I also love the interface you’re immediately greeted with here. You’re under no illusions that this is a golf watch.

But, this is so much more than your standard golf watch. Let’s take a look at the tech you can find in this.

The Tech

There is a LOT of tech details to get your teeth into with this watch. I’m going to run a list of bullet points here, but if you want the full rundown, you’ll get more details at the end of the review.

Launching the new colourway Green, along with the existing Blue and Black, each watch is a testament to Huawei’s dedication to high-end materials and master craftsmanship, offering consumers the perfect blend of elegance, sophistication, and performance.

The bunkered Verdict

This is a seriously impressive bit of kit. I think you could wear this watch for a year and you probably wouldn’t use all the features on it, there’s that much to it.

It tracks the basics like your steps, heart rate and sleep, but that’s scratching the surface. The watch supports underwater dives of up to 100 metres, has a 14-day battery life and has maps that show you the terrain on mountains. It even has three different straps included as standard.

Of course, you’re here to learn how it performs on the golf course, and I’ve worn it a few times now, most recently at Machrihanish Dunes, which is a great place to test out any golf kit.

Firstly, this watch does the basics absolutely right. Yardages to bunkers, hazards, and front/middle/back of the green were spot on, which I checked with a trusty rangefinder.

I particularly liked the real time distance measurement feature, which allowed me to see how far I would have to the green, if I hit a shot to a certain point in the fairway. If you’re trying to plot your way around a golf course, this is certainly a handy feature. In this mode, you also get an overhead view of the terrain, so you know what you’re coming up against.

Another intriguing feature is the Green View screen. Using GPS, this allows you to see how the green slopes, essentially giving you something of a green reading book on your wrist. To get an overview of how the green slopes, as you’re planning your approach shot, this is great, but it’s never going to be 100% accurate. Machrihanish Dunes was a baptism of fire for this feature, and while it was mostly on the right lines, some of the more intricate parts weren’t quite spot on.

Huawei green slope
The green view feature on the new Huawei watch is something I’ve not seen before.

One feature which I noticed pretty quickly was the AI Caddie, which was a nice touch. The Huawei was recommending clubs to me based on previous shots I hit, and it didn’t take long for it to work out what I needed in my hands. This takes into account the slope on the course, so you’ll get a steer in the right direction if you’re in between clubs.

It’s worth noting that some of these features aren’t going to be suitable for competitive play, so that’s something to consider if you’re teeing it up in the monthly medal.

Of course, the watch isn’t a golf specific model like some competitors, so there are some compromises to be made. Most golf watches are going to come with around 35,000 pre-loaded courses, while the Huawei comes with 15,000 courses. Those courses need to be downloaded via the Huawei Health app, which you should look to do before you arrive at the course, as you’ll need a good internet connection to get the course in the system.

Huawei range mode
The driving range mode in the Huawei Watch Ultimate Edition can definitely help you work on your swing.

Away from the golf course, this watch can still help you with driving range mode and this is probably the most impressive golf feature on the watch. This offers details on swing data, including time it takes for backswing and downswing time, tempo, and swing speed. This is a legitimately useful tool that’s going to help you work on parts of your swing. A big plus point here.

Overall, this is an impressive watch, and one that wouldn’t look out of place no matter what you are doing. It’s comfortable, looks great and does some pretty cool things on the golf course. I would imagine this is going to appeal to active people who play golf, who want a watch they can wear all the time.
