Whilst it might fly a little under the radar on tour – compared to some other equipment manufacturers, at least – Ping continues to be one of the most popular brands where it matters most: in the bags of club golfers all around the world.

There’s a good reason for that. It makes some of the most reliable and consistently excellent gear going. You know what you’re going to get when you buy from Ping.

The new G440 driver is further evidence of that.

Building on the huge success of the G430, the G440 features the lowest centre of gravity ever in a Ping driver, as well as a host of other exciting tech developments and refinements. There are three models to choose from – SFT, MAX and LST – with something to suit every golfer.

Let’s dive in…

The Looks

Arguably the biggest talking point here is the Turbulators (the series of raised lines you can see on the crown). Compared to other recent Ping drivers, they have more of a ‘slimline’ look to them, which will please those who have, until now, perhaps struggled with looking down on them at address.

All three G440 models also feature Ping’s Carbon Fly Wrap, which gives the crown that two-time, all-black finish. Previously, only the LST model benefited from this tech.

The blue accents on the sole give that classic Ping look. Understated, classy and very easy on the eye.

The Tech

Of course, there’s a lot more to the more to the Carbon Fly Wrap than just how it looks. It’s also incredibly light, which allows Ping engineers to place weight further back and low. In a similar fashion, a brand-new Free Hosel design has taken weight out of that part of the club. These savings, combined with shallower face designs, means the centre of gravity is closer to the force line, helping to deliver fast ball spin, optimised spin and a higher launch.

The lower face height, meantime, results in a hotter, thinner face, which produces more flex, particularly in the high heel region – one of the most common places a golfer will mishit the ball.

Whilst they have a refined look, the Turbulators on the crown still deliver improved aerodynamics for club speed, whilst the so-called ‘spinsistency’ of the titanium face ensures you get the right amount of spin, no matter how high or low on the face you make contact.

All three models feature the eight-setting Trajectory Tuning 2.0 hosel, which, amongst other things, allows you to adjust your loft up or down by 1.5˚.

The G440 MAX – the most forgiving of the three models and and the one that will fit most golfers – has a 29g, three-position adjustable back weight for added shot control.

The G440 LST, with its 450cc design, also features the 29g back weight but is geared more towards players with faster swing speeds, providing lower spin and more control.

Golfers in need of a slice-correction, meantime, will gravitate towards the G440 SFT. It has a two-position Draw and Draw+ 23g back weight.

The bunkered Verdict

If you thought the G430 drivers were great to hit, just wait until you try G440.

The new, lowered centre of gravity makes them easy to (a) launch and (b) keep the ball in play. The stability across all three models is just brilliant and the new Free Hosel design has cranked up the forgiveness, particularly out of those heel strikes, allowing the face to flex more.

During a recent visit to Ping HQ in Arizona, I took the LST model out on the course and I was blown away by its performance. It was so long and forgiving. When you swing the club as fast as I do (i.e. very fast), you can be severely punished when you do mishit it. But the G440 reined that in significantly. It was just so stable.

Fast, long, forgiving and, with those two big weight savings in the hosel design and the crown, easier to hit than ever. Not for the first time, Ping has absolutely knocked it out the park.
