What kind of performance do you look for from a set of game improvement irons? Higher launch? Longer carries? Better stopping power?
The new Ping G440 set ticks all those boxes – and more.
Complementing the new drivers, fairway woods and hybrids with which they share a name, the G440 irons are going to appeal to a significant proportion of you reading this.
Let’s take a closer look at what they have to offer.
The Looks
One word: stunning. Yes, the Ping G440 is a game improvement iron but it has more of a player’s shape to it, which will undoubtedly appeal to golfers who think game improvement irons are too bulky. A shallow face is complemented by chrome detailing in the back of the iron.
Classy, sophisticated and not necessarily what you might expect from a club in this category.
The Tech
In addition to being shallower, the face is also 9% thinner than it was in the G430 irons, which increases ball speed and provides a more player-preferred look at address. It also saves approximately 4g per iron, with that saving redistributed lower and further back in the head. That’s important because this lowers the centre of gravity, which means faster ball speeds and greater forgiveness.
Elsewhere, the four-piece moulded PurFlex cavity badge on the back of the iron is more flexible than it was in previous designs, expanding and contracting to support the thinner face while contributing to more ball speed and enhancing the feel and sound.
An additional eighth of an inch has been added to the 4-, 5- and 6-irons, helping golfers generate more ball speed to launch their long irons higher, which, in turn, creates more consistent distance gaps.
Reducing the number of wedges from five to four – PW, UW, 52°, 56° – and modifying their lofts also improves gapping. The 56°, specifically, is inspired by the iconic Ping Eye2 sand wedge, with its bounce profile, sole design and hosel shaped to help all golfers successfully negotiate bunkers.
The verdict
A set of irons that does exactly what it claims to: plenty of distance, incredible consistency, and bags of forgiveness no matter where on the face you hit it. I wasn’t at my best on the first day I tested them but I was hitting greens with good strikes, bad strikes, average strikes – you name it. You can’t underestimate the value of that. What could have been a bad round was made a whole lot more enjoyable thanks to the equipment I was using.
Without doubt, these are a noticeable step up from the G430 irons. If you’re in the market for a new set or irons this year, you should give these serious consideration.
