If you struggle in the bunker, Ping’s brand new BunkR wedge is designed to make getting out a sure thing each time.

We have all struggled out of the bunkers from time to time. In some cases, it can really turn people away from golf. There’s not many more frustrating things than your ball hitting the lip of the bunker and flying back to your feet.

That’s why the Ping BunkR Wedge is specifically engineered to assist golfers who struggle with their bunker shots.

This is no normal wedge. Instead, there are a lot of things which mean this wedge makes it easier to get the ball out of the bunker and back onto the short stuff.

The First Look

This new Ping BunkR wedge takes its looks from the iconic Ping Eye2 iron shape. You can see it’s meant to be played with a square face, which is helped by the vast 64° of loft, as well as the healthy 14.5° of bounce.

There is a lot of confidence to be gained looking down at a wedge like this when you in a bunker.

The Tech

Here’s what Ping has to say about the Ping BunkR wedge.

A key element of the BunkR’s design is its friendly bounce. With 14.5° of bounce, the club moves through the sand with ease, minimising resistance and preventing the club from digging too deeply. The 64° loft of the BunkR plays a crucial role in this, allowing golfers to pop the ball high into the air and land it softly onto the green.

Ping has also incorporated a wedge-specific shaft and grip to enhance playability further. The lightweight PING Z-Z115 shaft is designed with a lower balance point, creating a more balanced feel throughout the swing. Additionally, the Ping 360 Dyla-wedge Lite Grip is ¾-inch longer than standard grips, giving players the ability to choke down for better trajectory control and increased versatility around the greens.

“Many Ping products have been game changers, but the BunkR is truly life-changing. Unlike traditional wedges that require golfers to open the clubface in the bunker, the BunkR allows for a simple, square-faced approach-just like any other shot. With a square stance, feet aimed at the target, and a natural swing that strikes behind the ball, the high loft and innovative design effortlessly launch the ball out of the sand and onto the green.” said John K. Solheim, Ping CEO & President.

The bunkered Verdict

I hit this at Ping HQ in Arizona and this is brilliant if you struggle to get out of bunkers. With that whopping 64 degrees of loft and 14.5 degrees of bounce it’s the perfect combo to get out of the bunker without opening or manipulating the clubface, something many people aren’t comfortable with. With the full face of grooves, it’s forgiving if you mishit, as it still gives you spin and control off the face.

It’s a fun club to have in the bag, but it is going to be ideal for players who are looking for more forgiveness and ease of use when it comes to bunker shots. If you want  a high-loft, high-bounce wedge for greater versatility around the greens, this could be a game changer when you find yourself in the bunkers. Whether you are new to the game or an experienced golfer looking for an easier way to handle bunker shots, this is a great choice.
