The TaylorMade P790 iron is one of the most popular players distance irons to be ever made and it’s back and better than ever in 2025.

TaylorMade’s P790 has been a favourite for golfers, from low handicappers to high handicappers because of their aesthetically pleasing looks, explosive distance and forgiveness.

In this new 2025 P790 there is a new face material, a whole new look and even more stability for the best consistency throughout the set. Let’s take a closer look.

The First Look

This is one of the best looking irons of 2025, it’s just so clean. The P790 logo has been repositioned so it sits in the middle on the back of the clubhead, falling in line with the rest of the P Series range. The topline is slightly thinner than the previous generation which looks very clean behind the ball. As you move in to the longer irons the sole radius has been increased and is paired with a progressive bevelled leading edge for better turf interaction and performance.

The Tech

One of the key additions to this new TaylorMade P790 is the new face material. This all-new P790 uses a new forged face material, the 4340M. This material is 20% stronger, allowing engineers to design the face thinner and faster than previous models. These properties increase the coefficient of restitution. As a result, golfers experience faster ball speeds and longer carry distances. When compared to the previous model of P790 irons, the use of 4340M created a 24% larger sweetspot for a more consistent distance from the top of the set to the bottom.

A big goal for TaylorMade was improved sound and feel. Through the use of T-modal analysis, each head has been strategically engineered to control the frequencies that ultimately dictate feel and sound at impact.

These are also some of the most stable irons TaylorMade has ever made. That’s due to strategic repositioning of up to 40g of tungsten internally, and FLTD CG that positions the CG lowest in long irons for easier launch and playability, and progressively higher in the shorter irons for precise spin, distance and trajectory control.

Tungsten weighting has been moved lower in the long irons, lowering the centre of gravity. As the set progresses up through the 7-iron, the tungsten weight shifts closer to the toe. This increases both stability and MOI in the middle of the set, further enhancing forgiveness and delivering consistent distance and overall performance. Tungsten isn’t found in the 8-iron through pitching wedge allowing the centre of gravity to sit higher in the head where it enhances control.

You still have the Thick-Thin Back Wall Construction which has the honeycombed cutouts across the internal back wall to remove excess weight. This allows engineers to strategically position more weight lower in the clubhead to achieve consistent performance. The Thru-Slot Speed Pocket is also found in the 4-7 irons. This is where most mis hits occur and protects ball speeds which ultimately translates to consistent distance. The classic SpeedFoam Air fills the hollow body construction of P790 irons further ensuring that crisp feel.

The bunkered Verdict

These are amazing. From when I hit them at TaylorMade HQ in California, at the Kingdom, to hitting them back in Scotland, I’ve found these are really impressive. What I liked about them straight away was the look. A thinner topline than previous generations which look really sharp in comparison to other players distance irons. The badge and finish on the back looks so good and if you had a combo set from P770 into the P790 it would look seamless in transition.

In terms of performance, the biggest standout is the new face material. It’s so forgiving and the sweetspot is massive which gives you the consistency in distance and speed. The forgiveness is great from the FLTD CG design especially in the longer irons which also could be an option off the tee for some players. The feel is great, they look great, the performance is great. They are such a complete players distance iron, ideal for the low handicappers to high handicappers and every golfer between.

TaylorMade has done a brilliant job on the new 2025 P790 irons.
