Vice Golf, once known mostly for their golf balls and snazzy accessories, have turned their hands to designing clubs. But, how do they perform? I took one of their putters, the VGP02 out on the course to test it out.
Before we get into the club itself, I’ve got to commend Vice on their online service with this club. While ordering, and this is something open to everyone, I answered questions about my putting (which is pretty streaky, to be polite), in order to get a club that fitted me best.
Things like how tall I am, where I tend to miss putts, how confident I am from short range and preferred looks are all covered, and at the end you’re given a recommendation on what putter is going to suit you. Well, I was recommended the VGP02 mallet, which arrived in the Emerald Dynasty colourway, so I took it to the course.
There’s a lot to like about the looks of this putter. The head is a fang shape of sorts, with a V shape running between the two fangs on the outside of the head. Where you would usually find a dot or line, you’ve got an arrow pointing to the centre of the face, where you want to the line ball up to. Look, this won’t be to everyone’s taste, but when you’re using it, I think it’s really confidence inspiring, which is the whole point of a mallet putter.
Also, I’m a big fan of the headcover, which has a really premium feel to it. The blacked out shaft and grip also adds a touch of quality to this putter.
There’s a lot of tech to get through here, so we’re going to break things down into some key sections. Here’s what Vice say about their mallet putter.
100% CNC Milled
This putter is five times milled, which helps to deliver brilliant levels of precision with your putts. Vice say that it takes six hours to mill each of their putterheads, and you can certainly see the attention to detail in the head.
Precision Engineering
The tapered steel wings shift the centre of gravity away from the clubface, increased further due to the utilisation of aluminum for the main body. This results in a high MOI putter, while sustaining club face positional feel, usually lost by traditional mallets.
Sensory Experience
On impact, the VGP02 produces a slightly dampened, lower pitch and muted sound with maximized resonating feel.
Initially tested exclusively with normal golfers, we gradually honed in on what we believe to be the perfect impact feeling which provides accurate positional face feedback, across both axes of the putter face.
The sound and feel of the VGP02 combine to teach players to consistently find the sweet spot of the clubface.
I’ve always been someone who uses mallet putters, so it’s no surprise that I took a shine to this straight away. As soon as you pick this putter up, you’ll see the attention to detail that has gone into making it.
When it comes to engineering, you’ll not be surprised to see this is living up to the German standard.
The milling on the face really does help to give a putter with a great feel on the greens, something which I value.
Vice say this putter offers high levels of MOI, so it’s no surprise that the head is noticeably large behind the ball. For me, it’s a nice size, but from toe to heel, it might be a bit much for some. Of course, there are other options if you want something a little more compact.
This putter is heavy, with the head weighing in at 395g, but it’s not cumbersome. I actually felt like once you got the head moving from behind the ball, the putter almost wants to swing itself like a pendulum. For someone who can get a little twitchy on short putts (I’m looking inwardly here), that’s a God-send.
I’m someone who putts best when they get the putter going back and through pretty straight, and this club certainly lends itself to that.
Overall, I really like the way this putter performs. I really did see the ball rolling end over end, even on longer putts where I didn’t quite strike the middle of the face. Like I say, the head on this putter is pretty large, so your margin for error is pretty large too. While I do like the looks, I’m someone who likes a line on the putter head, so I’m probably going to stick with that for now, but if I fancy a change, I’ll certainly think about putting this in the bag.
Of course, this putter isn’t cheap. With prices starting at £319.99, and going up for some colours, it’s in the realms of the Scotty Cameron’s and Odyssey Milled’s of the world and many will opt for the big name brands. And, I’m aware the looks won’t be for everyone.
But, if you’re wanting something different, which really does perform well and will stand out on the greens, you’ll like the look of this.
