A club that was in Robert MacIntyre’s bag for his first start in a professional tournament is back in play at this week’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
The Scot has always been one to chop and change his equipment. Whether it’s different putters, split sets of irons or various drivers, MacIntyre has one of the most volatile bags on tour. However, it’s clearly working for the Genesis Scottish Open champion.
While most of his bag now seems to be a little more settled, there is one club that’s been in and out for all of his professional career, and it’s made a surprise appearance at the Alfred Dunhill Links.
That old faithful is his TaylorMade AeroBurner 3-wood, a model which came out in 2015. Now, nearly ten years later, the same club is back in the bag.
• WITB: What’s in Robert MacIntyre’s bag?
As reported by SMS on Tour, the 3-wood, which MacIntyre has held onto since his amateur days, was in play for a first round of 67 at Carnoustie.
It’s nothing too unusual to see tour players using clubs that are fairly outdated. Take Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau for example, who both use a Nike Vapour Fly Pro driving iron.
However, the TaylorMade AeroBurner is something of a special case.

In 2019, MacIntyre posted a video to his Instagram waving goodbye to the trusty 3-wood, which is now exhibiting a pretty healthy wear mark.

However, the next year, it had managed to work its way back into his set-up. That was only a brief stint in 2020, and the addition of some brand-new technology looked to have relegated the AeroBurner, which the Scot has had since his amateur days, to the bench.

Whether the AeroBurner will last long in the Scot’s bag remains to be seen, but for this week, familiarity looks to be key.
