TaylorMade are the kings when it comes to creating mini drivers and, to be honest, they might have outdone themselves with their latest design. The latest addition to the mini driver range is the TaylorMade R7 Quad mini, and if there is one thing TaylorMade have always done well, it’s with mini drivers and the attention to detail. This isn’t just based on looks, but also the versatility and overall performance. So, how does this new TaylorMade R7 Quad mini compare to last year year’s TaylorMade BRNR Copper mini? Well, let’s put them head to head and find out, shall we?

A take on the TaylorMade’s first adjustable weighted driver that is versatile, long and fast.

PROS

  • Iconic colouring that not only looks good but brings back fond memories of the original
  • Adjustable weighting on the sole has four weight ports to help with MOI and launch
  • Twist Face and Thru Slot Speed Pocket help straighten up shots and deliver consistent distance

CONS

  • There are no cons, TaylorMade have nailed this
Available for £399 from TaylorMade
This new mini driver offering from TaylorMade is certainly going to be a popular one. The TaylorMade R7 Quad mini is based on TaylorMade’s first adjustable weighted driver, the R7 Quad, which was a massive hit with golfers back in 2004. It still has the same colour scheme and looks incredible from the head cover, shaft and, of course, the detailing on the sole of the driver head. You have four weight ports on the sole, akin to the original R7 Quad. It has two 4g weights at the back and two 13g weights at the front, one forward and towards the heel and the other forward towards the toe. There are loads of combinations to help you dial in your desired shot shape, flight and spin characteristics, where you can make it as forgiving or as fast as you like.

You still have the modern TaylorMade tech like the Twist Face and the Thru Slot Speed Pocket technologies to help keep your mishits on track, with a four-degree loft sleeve making it even more versatile.

It’s forgiving, fast and easy to launch with good control

PROS

  • 304cc head easy on the eye
  • Adjustable weighting for different ball flights and speed
  • Retro logo’s inspired from the 90’s Burner
  • Twist face and Thru Slot Speed Pocket deliver forgiveness on mishits

Available for £379 from TaylorMade
The TaylorMade BRNR Mini Driver Copper is based on the iconic 90’s TaylorMade Burner. The retro logo really allows you to go back down memory lane. From the grip to the headcover, they haven’t missed a trick. It still holds that classic look and feel that the TaylorMade burner driver did. The TaylorMade BRNR Mini Driver Copper is extremely versatile, so it can be used as a higher lofted driver in a smaller head, or it can also be used as a stronger lofted oversized 3-wood. It has a 304cc head, which is significantly smaller than the 460cc heads that we see in driver, but the shape is still larger than you might think. The adjustable weighting plays a big part in the launch, speed, and forgiveness. The 13 gram and the 1.5 gram can be moved forward and back and if heavier weight is further forward you will see a lower launch and faster speed, and if it’s further back you will have a mid to higher launch which is also more forgiving. Now, the Twist Face tech and Thru Slot Speed Pocket is delivering that forgiveness on those off-centre hits, making sure if it is low in the face, off the heel or toe of the club you will see straighter shots.
Conclusion I’m a massive fan of mini drivers, as they really meet the needs of such a wide variety of golfers. From tour pros to higher handicappers, golfers looking for a secondary option off the tee, a more forgiving fairway wood or a driver that is simply a smaller profile, the mini driver is without a doubt the most versatile club as it meets the needs of so many golfers. What TaylorMade have done over the years with their Mini Driver is brilliant, and the BRNR Mini Copper is a testament to that. It is so versatile, delivering fast ball speeds, penetrating flight and can be switched to higher launching and more forgiving settings. But just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, TaylorMade have outdone themselves once again with the R7 Quad Mini driver. This not only looks amazing, but the detailing from the shaft, headcover, and sole is perfect. The performance is mind-blowing as well, with a penetrating ball flight and explosive speeds making it really stable. If I were looking for a secondary option, this would be it as there is so much versatility and more ability to move weights around compared to the BRNR Mini Copper. Meanwhile, the infinity crown looks really clean. They have nailed the brief once again with R7 Quad Mini taking one of the most iconic TaylorMade drivers and bring it back to life in the R7 Quad Mini. The TaylorMade R7 Quad Mini Driver is available from April 15, with an RRP of £399. The mini driver will have two loft options, with 11.5 degrees available in right and left handed. A 13.5 degree head is available in a right-handed option.
