There’s no secret that Bryson DeChambeau hits the golf ball miles. But, what is the science behind the scientist’s driver?
As some of you may know, Bryson DeChambeau uses the Krank Fire driver. But why does he use Krank over the other big brands which are so popular?
Well, he’s called the scientist for a reason. He’s had his irons 3D printed, he uses incredibly upright irons, he’s got JumboMax XL grips and puts his golf balls in Epsom salts, he thinks of it all. So what makes this driver so different?
Krank Golf originally started in the Long Drive scene, developing and making heads for professional long drivers. These heads featured very durable faces, so they could handle speeds upwards of 220mph ball speed.

Bryson has been involved in the Long Drive scene, competing in the 2022 World Championship where he worked on swinging the club faster, but he wanted a driver that would handle his speed, giving him the best opportunity to hit more fairways at his speed.

The Krank Fire driver is incredibly durable, but it is the bulge and roll design that Bryson DeChambeau really liked.
Krank have spent over 23 years perfecting bulge and roll on the driver face, which helps bring those off-centre hits back to the fairway.
How does bulge and roll work?
Think of the point where the ball meets the club and imagine the ball doesn’t quite hit the middle of the face. Bulge and roll is the shape of the face, which helps to take the ball flight back to neutral as much as possible. Combine that with features like cupped face forging, extreme body rigidity, and super hardened beta titanium, the drivers reduce lateral spin and maximise distance.
Other brands use bulge and roll, but it’s not as extreme as Krank. The Krank design is more noticeable, to provide the ideal combination for accuracy and distance. This design has contributed to 36 World Long Drive championships and Bryson DeChambeau’s 2024 US Open win.
The Krank is built for speed
Krank Golf’s cupped face forged design enhances performance by amplifying the trampoline effect, creating a more flexible clubface, expanding the sweet spot, and increasing forgiveness.
This advanced technology ensures that even off-centre hits result in faster ball speeds, delivering longer and straighter drives with every swing.

Forgiveness and speed
The 100% Cupped Face Forged design increases the size of the sweet spot, resulting in greater forgiveness and more consistent ball flight.
This means that whether you hit the ball dead centre or slightly off, you’ll experience improved accuracy and direction.

Drag reduction and adjustability
On top of that, you have the aerodynamic ridge to reduce drag, the weight ports on the sole to straighten out your ball flight and the Tri-Sleeve adapter to tighten dispersion even more.
There is weight in the toe and heel to help with stability, giving you a better chance to hit the ball straight off the tee.
You can see why DeChambeau would use this driver. It’s aerodynamic, fast off the face, durable and at the high speeds that DeChambeau produces, it provides high levels of stability that help him hit fairways and continue to produce huge speeds.
