The odds of making a hole-in-one are around 12,500 to one. That stat got us thinking. How cool would it be to defy that number, while hitting some of the best irons in the game in the process?
It was the start of a conversation in the bunkered office, but we had to work out a few other factors.
What clubs would we use to try and make a hole-in-one on camera? Where would we do it? And, how would we make sure that everyone saw the ball go in?
Now, we’re realistic to know that we probably won’t make a hole-in-one on our first attempt at it. We might not make it on our 50th or 100th attempt, either. So, we need clubs that are going to be forgiving and help us in our quest.
We thought back to our test of forgiving irons earlier in the year and there was a candidate that stood out: Wilson. Specifically, their range of Dynapwr irons.
These are forgiving, they go for miles and they look great. Bingo.

Then, we thought about what holes we’d love to make a hole-in-one on. With The Open heading to Royal Portrush this year, we thought we should pick a hole from there and, once again, there was a clear winner: Calamity Corner. The fearsome par-3 16th hole will measure well over 200 yards at this year’s championship.
But, that will be no match for our big-hitting gear editor James Tait – who volunteered his talents – and his shiny set of Wilson Dynapwr irons.

As you can imagine, heading to Royal Portrush to do this challenge was going to prove tricky. The last thing the pros need is for us to be digging up the tee box and peppering the green with pitch marks just a few weeks before the final major of the year.
So, we’re heading somewhere closer to home: the Trackman simulator at Golf It!, in Glasgow. This is as close as you’ll get to the real thing and with the full hole at our disposal on the big screen, we’re giving ourselves every chance of making the ace.
And then, there’s the final point: how can we make sure that you, the viewer, is able to see James make the hole-in-one? The answer was simple. We livestream the day to catch the moment. That’s right, you can join James and the rest of the team on a watchalong next Wednesday, from 2pm to 6pm, to see him defy the 12,500 to one odds. It will be a test of skill, endurance but most of all, mental strength.
With that, the idea for our Wilson Wednesday came together. Here’s the details…
Wilson Wednesday – The Details
What are we doing? – Our gear editor James Tait will spend all afternoon trying to make a hole-in-one.
Where are we doing it? – We’ll be at Golf It! in Glasgow, but virtually, we’ll be on the 16th hole at Royal Portrush.
Why are we doing it? – We want to put the Wilson Dynapwr irons to the ultimate test and make a hole-in-one with them.
How can you get involved? – Tune into our livestream on YouTube or Instagram from 2pm-6pm on Wednesday 2 July and send us your support in the live chat. James is going to need it.
