First there was Phil Mickelson’s infamous Frankenwood in 2013, and then there was the introduction of the ‘Deep’ fairway woods designed to offer an option for golfers that performs from the fairway and the tee. Now, Callaway has unveiled the new Bertha Mini 1.5, its latest foray into the ‘driver alternative’ category, and it says it’s built for every golfer.

Aimed at a much wider range of golfers than the Frankenwood and ‘Deep’ fairway woods, the Bertha Mini 1.5 has been designed as a driver alternative and has already been described by Callaway as ‘its longest, most accurate fairway wood’.

With Tour pro through to high handicappers able to take advantage of the technology, the Bertha Mini 1.5 has a 235cc head that is larger than a normal fairway wood, but smaller than your average driver.

‘In many ways we invented this category when we previously introduced the Frankenwood and 3 Deep’ – Dr Alan Hocknell, Callaway’s senior VP of R&D

‘The Bertha Mini 1.5 is a new type of weapon off the tee for high swing speed players and low swing speeds alike,” say Callaway. “It has all the features that you love about a driver built into the body of a bigger fairway wood.”

Available in two head lofts – 12º and 14º – the Bertha Mini 1.5 features Callaway’s Optifit hosel that allows the loft to be adjusted by two-degrees upwards and one-degree downwards with a neutral or draw setting.

When it comes to clubhead technology, Callaway hasn’t scrimped, either, despite the smaller head. It has packed in its Forged Hyper Speed Face Cup to increase ball speeds across the face and a Forged Composite Crown that allows for weight savings and provides a lower centre of gravity with increased forgiveness. Callaway’s renowned Warbird Soleplate also features for more playability.

“Whilst in many ways we invented this category when we previously introduced the Frankenwood and 3 Deep, these products tended to appeal more to just the better player,” said Dr Alan Hocknell, senior vice president of research and development at Callaway Golf. “The significant difference with the Bertha Mini 1.5 is that it has all the forgiveness you would expect of a Bertha Driver and, therefore, will appeal to a much wider cross section of golfers.”
