GEAR SHORTS

Jason Day put in another irresistable performance at the Players Championship – with his TaylorMade Ghost Spider Limited Red putter the backbone of that success.

In the final round, while his chipping failed him at the ninth hole, his putter bailed him out to prevent a nightmare double-bogey. In total, Day was 1.450 in strokes gained putting on Sunday. To put that into context, he is currently second in that category for the season on 1.012, while the Tour average is -0.007.

Also, did you see that on the 18th, the Aussie hit his RSi 2 2-iron a mammoth 308 yards? Yes, you read that correctly, 308 yards. That’s 20 yards greater than the Tour average for driving distance.

The Masters - Final Round

Langer stays old school

He may be turning 59 later this year but Bernhard Langer is still mixing it with the best while using some old gear.

As the PGA Tour’s equipment guru Jonathan Wall pointed out, Langer still had a classic Ben Hogan Apex 4-iron in the bag at the Players Championship. An impressive selection considering the last model of those irons was made way back in 1998.

Spieth’s new SM6 wedges

After his wedge meltdown on the back-nine at the Masters, Jordan Spieth returned to competitive action at the Players Championship and immediately had new Vokey SM6 wedges built for him.

Spieth currently plays with four SM6 wedges in the bag – 46˚ F-Grind, 52˚ F-Grind, 56˚ S-Grind and 60˚ L-Grind – each with a raw finish that will rust over time.

Varner III games $80 putter

Harold Varner III may be a PGA Tour rookie but a used putter that he found in a bucket in an Edwin Watts Golf Shop is working an absolute treat for him.

Varner III picked up an old Odyssey Rossie putter while he was playing at Hilton Head, replacing the putter he had been using over recent months. Since he put it in play, he has recorded two top-10 finishes and was tied for 21st at Quail Hollow.Varner III said: “I had a Scotty Cameron GoLo in the bag, but I putted with an Odyssey Rossie in college that I really liked. The new ones have a weird face on it which I don’t like.”

Sullivan’s new 3-wood

Englishman Andy Sullivan was doing some work with Ping’s tour fitters ahead of the Players Championship and ended up with a new G 3-wood in the bag.

He seemed pretty happy with it by all means but he was unable to make the cut. Be sure to watch out for him using it in the weeks to come, though.

And finally…

Did you see Rory McIlroy’s trousers on Thursday? Earlier in the week, Nike had announced the release of its Air Zoom 90 IT shoes inspired by Rory’s love of the Nike Air Max casual trainers.

McIlroy saw it as the perfect opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Rickie Fowler and try the high top shoes and cropped trousers combo.
