1. Akureyri Golf Club
In June ‘91, four British golfers – Simn Gard, Nick Harley and brothers Patrick and Alastair Maxwell – completed 14 rounds in one day at Iceland’s Akureyri GC, the most northerly 18-hole course in the world, where there is 24-hour daylight during parts of the summer.
2. Guildford Lakes
Back in 1934, Colonel Bill Farnham managed to play 376 holes in 24 hours and ten minutes at the Guildford Lakes Course in Connecticut. What makes this feat even more remarkable, is that he managed it using just a mashie and a putter!
3. Scarborough South Cliff
During the weekend of June 20-21, 1970, Yorkshire man Peter Chambers successfully played over 14 rounds of golf at the Scarborough South Cliff course. He played 257 holes in 1,168 strokes – an average of 84.4 strokes per round!
4. Okehampton
Okehampton member Michael Moore – not to be confused with the anarchic film-maker of the same name – managed to complete 15 rounds and six holes in one day on June 25, 1972. Starting at 4.15am and finishing at 9.15pm, he covered an estimated 56 miles in total.
5. Skipton
Skipton professional Graham Webster raised funds for a club extension on June 20, 1977, by completing 277 holes during daylight hours that day. Incredibly, he accomplished his feat using nothing more than a 5-iron and, even more incredibly, his marathon included a hole-in-one.
6. Four Home Nations
Sir Ian Botham (below) played a round of golf in all four Home Nations in one day in 1995. Playing with Gary Price, the pro at Branston, and Tony Wright, the owner of Burton-on-Trent, Botham played St Margaret’s, Anglesey and Dumfries & Galloway before finishing at Wright’s home course.
7. Marlborough
With Marlborough GC’s centenary year looming in 1988, club pro Laurence Ross raised some funds for the celebrations by completing eight rounds in 12 hours in June ‘87. Amazingly, against a par of 72 and playing from the back tees, he played the 576 holes in three-under-par!
8. Scotland
In 2005, Bernard Wood, a member at Rossendale GC, played all 18-hole courses in Scotland – at that time, a total of 377 – to raise money for the ‘Kirsty Appeal’ which supports the Frances House Children’s Hospice.
9. Bendigo Golf Course
Marathon runner Ian Colston completed a golfing marathon in 1971 in Australia. Using only a 6-iron. Colston played 401 holes over the Bendigo course in Victoria. This remains the greatest number of holes played in 24 hours on foot on a full-size course.
10. Royal Cinque Ports
As part of the 1992 centenary celebrations at the Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club in Kent, John Brazell played all 37 royal courses in Britain and Ireland in 17 days. He took 2,384 shots to complete his challenge – 62 of them birdies – scoring an average of 76.6 per round.
11. Bill Sampson
Bill Sampson played a marathon 202 holes in 12 hours at Old Tabby Links, South Carolina, and raised more than $40,000 for charity, which worked out to just slightly more than an hour per round, and about $208 per hole.
12. West Hill Golf Club
At 4:18am on Friday 6th July 2012, West Hill Golf Club members, Andy Pike and Ben Raven embarked on a record-breaking golf challenge to raise money for Sparks. The pair completed an astonishing 150 holes in just 17 hours. Armed with seven clubs apiece, they played a total of 1509 shots (Pike 775, Raven 734) and covered a distance of 37.5miles. The pair raised in excess of £6,000.
13. Jim Colton
Jim Colton was named the 2011 Walking Golfer of the Year by the Walking Golfers Society for his work in raising money to help Ben Cox, a caddie at Ballyneal who was injured in a skiing accident. Colton walked 155 holes in one day and raised over $110,000 to help the Cox family. The success of that event led to the formation of One Divot, a charitable organisation.
14. bunkered
On June 22, 2015, bunkered pair Tom Lovering and Michael McEwan took on the challenge of aiming to complete 100 holes in one day at Kingsbarns Golf Links. Raising money for Yorkhill Children’s Charity, the duo were set the task in early 2015 with three simple rules: complete every hole, walk the entire way and carry your own bag.
Tom and Michael hit their first tee shots at 4am and, accompanied by several other keen golfers throughout their five-and-a-half rounds, successfully finished in 16 hours and 41 minutes, raising a total of £8,142.50.
