North East company agrees one-year extension to important sponsorship deal

Scotland’s men’s elite squad was given a boost ahead of its trip to South Africa after sponsors, Aberdeen Asset Management, extended its agreement for another year.
It’s the fifth year that the global investment group has teamed up with the Scottish Golf Union having begun with support of the men’s elite squad and academy back in 2007.
Aberdeen Asset Management have made the South African trip possible for ten of Scotland’s most promising amateurs, who will compete in five events on the domestic circuit, as well as a test match against their hosts.
The players will leave for Johannesburg on January 25 returning to Scotland eight weeks later.
They will compete in the Gauteng North Open, the South African Amateur Strokeplay Championship, the Free State & Northern Cape Open, the South African Amateur Matchplay Championship and the Northern Amateur.
In addition to the SGU and Scottish Ladies Golf Association elite squads, Aberdeen Asset Management also sponsor a number of leading Scottish tour pros, including successful Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie and former Open champions Paul Lawrie and Sandy Lyle.
“We are very pleased to be extending our sponsorship of the Scottish Golf Union and the Scotland men’s elite squad having enjoyed a successful partnership over the past four years,” said the company’s chief executive Martin Gilbert.
“Our investment has helped bring some exciting young talent through the amateur ranks and we look forward to seeing these players progressing further.
“Golf is hugely important to Aberdeen Asset Management and we are committed to every level of the game in Scotland with a desire to see our players flourish, from the leading tour professionals to the youngsters in the Scottish Golf Academy.”
The SGU’s chief executive Hamish Grey also welcomed the sponsorship extension. He said: “Martin and his team at Aberdeen Asset Management have been fantastic supporters of Scottish golf and their commitment over the past four years has allowed the SGU to enhance our player development programme.
“The training camps to the United Arab Emirates and South Africa this winter have been made possible with their extended support and our players are extremely grateful for the new opportunities they have been given.”
