Any hopes Ana Pelaez Trivino harboured of making a charge at the AIG Women’s Open this weekend have been dashed after she was disqualified from the championship – after her caddie made a dreadful error.

Spanish ace Pelaez was sitting two-over after two rounds at St Andrews and comfortably inside the cut line.

However, it subsequently came to light that her caddie had used a Distance Measuring Device on two separate occasions – once on the tenth hole and again on the 18th.

That, unfortunately for the young LPGA rookie, was a breach of Model Local Rule G5.

• McEwan: St Andrews is over-used. It’s time to cut back.

The penalty of disqualification was therefore applied under Rule 4.3.

Pelaez turned professional in 2021 after completing her studies at the University of South Carolina. She had reached as high as 11th on the World Amateur Golf Rankings before turning her focus to the paid ranks.

She won her first Ladies European Tour title in 2022 when she claimed the Madrid Ladies Open, and finished fifth on the LET Order of Merit last year.

Currently 190th on the world rankings, Pelaez was making her third appearance in the AIG Women’s Open.
