Ahead of his return to The Masters, Angel Cabrera has spoken of the “really tough” years he spent in jail following his conviction for domestic abuse.
In a little over a week, Cabrera, the winner of the green jacket in 2010, will make his first visit to Augusta National since serving 30 month in prison for the assault and intimidation of two former partners.
The Argentine’s return to one of golf’s marquee events is sure to be amongst the biggest talking points at the tournament.
Fred Ridley, the chairman of Augusta National Golf Club, previously indicated a willingness to allow Cabrera to return to the first men’s major of the year, calling him one of The Masters’ “great champions”.

However, many onlookers have voiced their concerns over allowing welcoming somebody convicted of the crimes Cabrera has committed back to golf’s top table.
Speaking exclusively to the Daily Mail, Cabrera spoke of his excitement at returning to the scene of his second major victory, describing it as “the place where every single golfer wants to be.”
Detailing his time in prison, the 55-year-old added: “Those years have been really tough.

“Right now, I’m fine. But I regret everything that I have done wrongly in my past and I am also frustrated that I dumped very, very important years of my life. I made mistakes.
“It is one of the worst things that can happen to a human being, not being able to have freedom.
“The lack of freedom is something really difficult, really hard. And on the other hand, you know, I can tell you that the most important thing I feel right now is the second chance, the opportunity to get back on the right track.”
