South Africa is famous for birthing some of the world’s best golfers – but don’t forget the golf courses.
Golf stretches far enough back in the country’s history books to make that a no brainer and its venues still play host to prestigious events today.
Right across the country, there are gems deserving of global acclaim.
Here are some of our favourites…
• Best golf courses in Australia
St Francis Links
Green fee: From £52
A traditional links course with inland features, St Francis Links is an hour along the coast from Port Elizabeth. With no two holes the same, Jack Nicklaus says his signature course is the best he’s ever seen, so who are we to argue? It overlooks St Francis Bay and the Indian Ocean for good measure.

Blair Atholl Golf Estate
Green fee: From £70
A monster of a golf course to the north of Johannesburg. Gary Player formerly called this place home, and his signature course is the world’s third longest, measuring a mere 8,300 yards from the tips. The aptly named Crocodile River runs through here, while the par-3 third is a replica of Augusta’s ‘Golden Bell’.

The Links at Fancourt
Green fee: From £138
The Links at Fancourt is a classic South African test designed by Player. Stay in the hotel to get access to a tee time and you won’t regret it, particularly if you’re from the UK. It opened in 2000 and was modelled based on links courses over here – a great idea if you ask us.

Leopard Creek Country Club
Green fee: From £300
Leopard Creek is about as exclusive as they come, hence the bumper green fee. Forget the security, the course is manned by crocodiles and hippos, while sightings of antelope, buffalo and elephant are common. A true bucket list destination that plays host to the DP World Tour every year.

Humewood
Green fee: From £19
At the other end of the green fee ladder is Humewood, a links layout in the Eastern Cape. You won’t forget a round here in a hurry, largely thanks to the stunning sea views. Classic links features like pot bunkers and lightning greens make this so much fun.
