Greg Norman will not be welcome at events to mark the 150th Open, the R&A has announced.

Norman, a two-time Champion Golfer of the Year, has not been invited to either the Celebration of Champions event at the Old Course on Monday or the Champions’ Dinner that evening.

The governing body said it had made the decision to ensure focus remained on the tournament.

The governing body said it had made the decision to ensure focus remained on the tournament.

“In response to enquiries regarding The R&A Celebration of Champions field and the Champions’ Dinner, we can confirm that we contacted Greg Norman to advise him that we decided not to invite him to attend on this occasion,” the organisation said in a statement.

“The 150th Open is an extremely important milestone for golf and we want to ensure that the focus remains on celebrating the Championship and its heritage.

“Unfortunately, we do not believe that would be the case if Greg were to attend. We hope that when circumstances allow Greg will be able to attend again in future.”

Norman’s presence would have attracted attention given his involvement in the LIV Series, where he is chief executive.

The Saudi-backed breakaway tour has divided elite golf, with PGA Tour members being handed suspensions if they take part.
