As Dalmuir prepares to discover its fate today, Bryson DeChambeau has urged the local authority that operates the facility to keep it open.

The future of the course, on the outskirts of Glasgow, will be debated by West Dunbartonshire Council when it meets later today.

Options include keeping the course open but increasing membership and green fee rates; reducing it from 18 holes to 12; and closing it completely.

In an impassioned plea shared on social media by veteran caddie and Clydebank resident Craig Connelly, reigning US Open champion DeChambeau outlined the reasons why the track – and public golf more broadly – are “super important”.

“I’m here to tell you about Dalmuir golf course, how important public golf course is to the ecosystem, not only of just golf in general, but the community that you have there,” said DeChambeau.

“Sometimes people don’t realise the impact of what golf can be and what it is for a community, whether it’s character development, personal growth, learning more about yourself, or family development in general.

“I think it’s important for people to understand that if you don’t have golf courses like like Dalmuir and a community like Dalmuir, it’s difficult to continue to grow not only just a sport, but just a community.

“I think this golf course is super important, I know it’s super important, and I hope that people can understand how important it is to go out and sign that petition, keep this golf course alive, keep it in existence, for everybody’s sake and to make a different future for your generations to come.”

A petition urging the local authority to keep the course open has gathered more than 3,500 signatures, with the SNP group in the Labour-minority council having also pledged its support.

Earlier this week, bunkered.co.uk saw an email from SNP councillor Lauren Oxley which stated: “Dalmuir Golf Course is more than just a sporting facility.

“For generations, it has provided a space for people of all ages and backgrounds to stay active, socialise, and improve their physical and mental wellbeing.

“As the only municipal golf course in West Dunbartonshire, it also plays an important role in ensuring that golf remains accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford private memberships.”

Scottish Golf has also urged West Dunbartonshire Council to engage with it in order to find a viable and profitable solution for the century-old course.
