Bubba Watson hits 30ft putt… 5ft?!

• Watson duffs 30-foot putt in Rio de Janeiro
• American massively under-hits birdie opp on 14th hole
• Later says ‘a clump of mud’ fell off his putter mid-stroke

Bubba Watson is better known for his humungous driving than his putting – and, on today’s evidence, it’s not hard to see why.

The two-time Masters champion, one of Team USA’s four medal hopes in the men’s Olympic golf competition in Rio, had approximately 30 feet for birdie on the 14th hole – but, in weird scenes, hit it five feet at best.

Watson, who doesn’t have his regular caddie Ted Scott on his bag this week, appeared to look at the ground immediately after under-hitting the putt and, after completing his round, said ‘a clump of mud’ fell off his putter and he wasn’t able to stop his stroke.

This isn’t the first time Bubba has had mud-related difficulties on the golf course. Remember this gem from the 2015 Hero World Challenge?

Irrespective of that, Watson is bang in contention for a medal at the first Olympic golf event in 112 years. After opening with a two-over 73 on Thursday, he has since had two rounds of 67 to reach six-under – good enough, at the time of writing, for a tie for fifth with one round remaining.

Watson’s fellow American Rickie Fowler finally awoke from his Rio slumber today, too. The former Players champion had seven birdies and an eagle in a seven-under 64 to move into a tie for 16th. Another US golfer, Matt Kuchar, had a 69 to climb into a tie for eighth. However, Patrick Reed’s medal hopes look to be over after a two-over 73 dropped him to one-over for the tournament and into a tie for 36th.
