Bubba Watson has told bunkered that he pays no attention to critics who say that he doesn’t win enough.
In a wide-ranging, world exclusive interview, the former Masters champion also revealed:
• Why he gets so emotional when he wins;
• What he has done with Tiger Woods’ former home;
• What it’s like driving the General Lee;
• And the truth about the rumours that he has never had a golf lesson.
The flamboyant left-hander, 35, has won five times in nine seasons on the PGA Tour, including the 2012 Masters and the Northern Trust Open earlier this year.
However, many people are quicker to point to the number of times he has failed to close from a winning position rather than applaud him for the tournaments he has won.
“Golf’s just what I do. It’s not who I am.” – Bubba Watson
However, whilst that might bother other people, Watson told bunkered that it doesn’t affect him in the slightest.
“It’s funny,” he said. “I’ve been asked about this before and, you know, for me, I’m just honoured to be on the PGA Tour. I’ve been real lucky and, somehow, I’ve managed to win five times in nine years, one of them a major.
“I don’t take anything for granted and, likewise, I can’t let what other people think affect me. Why? Because when I’m gone, I don’t want to be remembered as a golfer. I want to be remembered as a person, a husband, and a dad. Golf’s just what I do. It’s not who I am.
“When I lost in Phoenix this year, a reporter asked me how it felt. I said, ‘Hey, only one guy was able to beat me this week, so that’s not bad. All I can do is try to go one better next week.’”
