Bubba Watson refused to be drawn on the real reason behind his issue on the 18th tee at Doral – batting it off by saying he’s just ‘a head case’.

The two-time major winner backed off three times before hitting his tee shot on the last, where he carded a par to finish one stroke behind winner Adam Scott, and had his reasons for doing so. But he didn’t say why, instead offering this.

“I’m going to go with this – I’m just a head case and I had to back off to get refocused,” he said. “I’m going to get blasted if I say what the true answer is, so I’m just going to say I had to back off because I’m just a head case and I tried to get the cobwebs out of my head and it worked out.”

When asked why he would get blasted, Watson batted it off, replying: “It was a great week. It was a great week. It was just one of those things, I had to back away and get the right thought patterns, and it worked out on that tee shot.”

Watson has vowed to choose his words more carefully after the media frenzy which followed his comments about the Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale in early February.

The American openly criticised the course, saying he didn’t like it and that he was only playing in the event because of his sponsors.
