It’s one of the oldest – and fiercest – debates in golf. Should people be allowed to wear jeans in the clubhouse?
According to Charley Hull, the answer is pretty simple.
Yes.
The 29-year-old Solheim Cup star made her feelings known in the latest edition of bunkered. Hull is the cover star of the magazine’s first-ever Fashion Special and, in an in-depth interview, covered a range of topics relating to golf and style.
When the subject of denim in the clubhouse came up, the English ace made her position perfectly clear.
“If they’re smart jeans, I really don’t see the problem with it,” said Hull. “I don’t understand why anybody would object to that. It’s really not the sort of thing to get offended by, and aren’t we trying to make the game more appealing anyway?

“I would maybe draw the line at wearing them on the golf course but only because I don’t think jeans help you play your best golf. You wouldn’t go for a run on the track wearing denims so you probably shouldn’t wear them to play golf. But in the clubhouse, yeah, I don’t see why not.”
She added: “Fashion’s always changing, not just in golf but in life in general. What’s in and what’s out can be completely different from one month to the next. That’s totally normal.
“The way I see it, if you’re comfortable in something, you might as well go out and play in it. At the end of the day, it’s not like we’re going out to a grand ball or a wedding or something, where you have to really dress up and look incredibly smart. We’re playing a sport.
“So listen, if you want to put your hood up because it’s raining or because it’s cold, why not?”
Hull, who put pen to paper on an apparel deal with Malbon Golf in January 2024, also revealed how she uses her outfits to help her play to her potential.

“A lot of it is about confidence,” she said. “If you’re looking smart and you’re feeling good about yourself, you’re going to go out on the course feeling like you’re already one-up on everybody else. That’s the way I think of it in my head. You feel smart, you’re comfortable, you feel confident – there’s a great chance you’re going to play good golf.
“That varies from person to person and what works for one doesn’t suit the other. For example, I don’t really like all these Instagram golf girls who wear these short, short skirts showing off their arse. I think that just looks stupid. But I don’t like long skirts either. At the end of the day, I just try to find a happy medium that’s a bit more ‘me’.
“You’ve just got to find whatever it is you like and whatever it is that makes you feel good within yourself. Because that’s going to translate to the way you play.
“Put it this way, I’ve never worn something I didn’t feel good in and ended up playing good golf. I just don’t think that’s possible.”
