Xander Schauffele had pretty big plans for the Claret Jug after winning The 152nd Open.
“My dad’s taking the first gulp out of it,” said the new Champion Golfer of the Year. “I’m curious to see what he’s going to pick as a first drink.”
The American’s hard-fought win over Justin Rose and Billy Horschel saw his name engraved in one of the most iconic trophies in sport.
It also earned him another piece of silverware – and one that’s much less well known.
Schauffele was one of only 13 players who made the cut in all four men’s major championships in 2024 and, as the one with the best aggregate score to par, he can look forward to taking delivery of the Royal Selangor Trophy very soon.
The Royal Selangor Trophy, pictured below, is awarded to the golfer with the lowest total score in the four major championships each year.

It is a 16-round competition which combines the four rounds from the Masters, the US Open, the Open Championship and the PGA Championship. To be eligible for the trophy, a golfer must play and make the cut in all four majors.
Sharing its name with one of the oldest golf clubs in Asia, the competition dates back to 1960, with Tiger Woods the first recipient of the current trophy in 1999.
“A golfer who participates in the 288 holes played on 16 separate days of the majors which is spread over four months has superior consistency and ability,” reads a statement on the trophy’s website.
“This event might be considered an even greater challenge than any one tournament. The list of winners shows how few have been successful.”

Fifteen-time major champion Woods has won the trophy on five occasions, with Jordan Spieth (2015), Brooks Koepka (2017 and 2019), and Rory McIlroy (2022) amongst the others.
With his victory at Royal Troon, Schauffele becomes the latest winner of the trophy. He was a combined 32-under-par for the four men’s majors in 2024, 15 shots clear of nearest challenger – and 2023 winner – Scottie Scheffler on 15-under.
Collin Morikawa was 15-under, with Shane Lowry (six-under) the only other player under-par.
Patrick Catnaly (E), Russell Henley (+1), Corey Conners (+3) and Hideki Matsuyama (+9) make up the remaining players, alongside Harry English (+10), Brooks Koepka (+14), Cameron Young (+17), Nicolai Hojgaard (+21) and Ryan Fox (+26).
