Colin Montgomerie narrowly missed out on a third consecutive Senior PGA Championship title after coming up three strokes short of Rocco Mediate at Harbor Shores.

The 52-year-old started the day two strokes behind the American and, at the turn, the margin was still the same as Mediate bounced back from a bogey at the seventh with a pair of birdies.

And, after getting to within one following a birdie, Montgomerie saw his hopes all but end with a bogey at the 14th, while Mediate making birdies on the 15th and 17th to finish on 19-under-par – three strokes ahead of the Scot.

“I did nothing wrong,” said Colin Montgomerie. “Went out and shot 67. All credit to Rocco. He shot 66. And you can't knock it.

“His up-and-down game today was brilliant. The first five holes he had five putts and to get momentum against that is very difficult. He's got to give you something and he never gave me anything.”

And victor Mediate was quick to pay tribute to Montgomerie after claiming his first Senior major title.

“Monty played like he usually plays, which is solid and good and relentless,” said Mediate. “Then I don’t know, it just turned out really cool. I didn’t know I shot 66, I didn’t know what the hell I shot today. A lot of great things happened today and I don’t believe I’m sitting here – I really don’t.
