John Daly has rejected claims that he is planning to quit golf after he was reported saying he was “done” with the game.

Upon missing the cut in last week’s Farmers Insurance Open, a PGA Tour event, Daly told a Golf Channel camera crew filming his reality TV show: “I can’t compete. I can’t play like I used to.

“I’m tired of embarrassing myself in front of my fans. I can’t do it anymore.”

However, just 24 hours later the two-time major winner made the u-turn via social networking site Twitter.

He posted: “I’m not retired and I never said I was retiring.

“The interview caught me after a tough two days and much frustration. All my sponsors want me to continue to play.”

“I’m going to honour the commitments to the tournaments that have given me sponsors’ exemptions and will continue to try and get them this year,” added Daly, who shot rounds of 79 and 71 at the Farmers to miss his second cut of 2010.

It’s not the first time Daly has been embroiled in controversy in recent times. The 43-year-old was suspended from the PGA Tour for the first half of 2009 for conduct detrimental to golf’s image.

Daly denied claims that the comments were a publicity stunt for the upcoming reality show starting March, saying: “Not my style”.
