DAVIS LOVE III | RYDER CUP

Davis Love III has been officially unveiled as the US Ryder Cup captain, more than a week after news broke that he’d lead the team for a second time at Hazeltine in 2016.

The news came at a pre-arranged press conference at The PGA of America headquarters in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, last night and Love couldn’t hide his delight at being given another chance to lead his country.

Davis Love said: “I am thrilled to be the Team USA captain and represent our country as we work to win back the Ryder Cup.

“It is a great honour to be in the position to help build the team, but our mission doesn’t end there. What we accomplish in 2016 at Hazeltine must serve as the foundation for future USA Ryder Cup teams.

“As the son of a PGA professional and representing all PGA members, I am very proud to accept this responsibility and I’m eager to get started.”

“Today marks a new era in US Ryder Cup history” – Task force co-chair Derek Sprague

The 50-year-old will be desperate for revenge after the USA’s final day meltdown at Medinah in 2012 during his first spell as Ryder Cup as captain, and was chosen by an 11-man task force which was set up in the wake of the USA’s debacle under Tom Watson at Gleneagles in 2014.

Co-chairman of the task force, Derek Sprague, said: “Today marks a new era in US Ryder Cup history, and we could not be more pleased that Davis Love will be our captain.

“Davis brings a unique perspective and experience of having served as captain, vice-captain and as a key player on six Ryder Cup teams. He has the utmost respect of his peers and will bring his vast Ryder Cup knowledge to lead Team USA in 2016.”

2016 United States Ryder Cup Team Captain Announced

Tom Lehman, USA Ryder Cup captain in 2006, was announced as the first of Davis Love’s four vice-captains, for which the criteria has changed. Decided by the task force, the vice-captains will be two former captains and two individuals with extensive Ryder Cup experience.

Speaking about Lehman, Love added: “I am very pleased that Tom has accepted to serve as a vice-captain, bringing his outstanding experience and the respect of all players to our next team. Tom has been a trusted friend who I can call upon to provide valuable advice as we go about preparing Team USA.”

There are also changes in the qualification process for the US team, with the top eight selected through a points system based on specific criteria.

Davis Love will go head-to-head at Hazeltine in 2016 with good friend and fellow one-time major winner Darren Clarke, who was named as European Ryder Cup captain last week.
