• Follows long line of high-profile names to write for bunkered
• First column appears in upcoming edition, issue 145
Best-selling golf magazine bunkered is delighted to announce much-loved Scottish sports broadcaster Dougie Donnelly as its new columnist.
Donnelly, 62, will write for the magazine every edition, providing a unique take on the game from his experiences of travelling the world as the lead commentator for European Tour Productions.
Announcing Donnelly’s appointment, bunkered editor Bryce Ritchie said: “Dougie is one of the most knowledgeable TV personalities in UK sport, so it’s a real coup for us to have him as our new columnist.
“We have had some fantastic columnists in the magazine in our 20-year history, most notably Colin Montgomerie, Paul Lawrie, Bernard Gallacher and the late Arthur Montford. We know that Dougie will continue that great tradition in his own style.
“He is massively popular, hugely knowledgeable, brilliantly witty, and we know he’s going to bring a new element to the magazine.”
“I am delighted and flattered to be joining the team at bunkered.” – Dougie Donnelly
Born in Glasgow in June 1953, Dougie Donnelly began his career at Radio Clyde in the 1970s before joining BBC Scotland’s sports team in 1978. There, he presented programmes such as Sportscene Live and Afternoon Sportscene, as well as the network’s rugby union coverage, the World Cups in 1990 and 1998, and 33 consecutive editions of the Scottish Cup Final.
He was the first Scot to present Grandstand, covering a host of niche sports, including darts, snooker and bowls. His career has also taken in four Commonwealth Games, four Summer Olympic Games, and three Winter Olympic Games.
On golf, he anchored the BBC’s coverage for many years and was a regular fixture at the Masters Tournament, Open Championship and Ryder Cup. These days, he travels to approximately 20 tournaments each year to commentate on European Tour Productions’ live global television coverage.
“I am genuinely delighted and flattered to be joining the team at bunkered and look forward to trying to bring its readers an insight into life on the European Tour,” said Donnelly. “I have been a bunkered reader since the very first issue and have always enjoyed the magazine and admired their unique commitment to Scottish golf and Scottish golfers.”
