The clubhouse of East Kilbride Golf Club was completely destroyed after it was engulfed by a huge fire early on Tuesday evening.

Eight fire crews attended the scene but were powerless to prevent the flames ripping through the building as they battled strong winds and a limited water supply through the night.

There were no reports of casualties but the structure suffered irreparable damage, leaving members facing the approaching new season without a clubhouse.

The house of the club steward, which is attached to the main clubhouse building, was also destroyed in the blaze. It was he who raised the alarm.

There are currently no indications as to what caused the fire, but an investigation will be carried out by the police and fire services when the structure is made safe for crews to enter.
