Phil’s history of heartbreak began in 1999 at Pinehurst, as the late Payne Stewart pipped him to the title by a single shot, courtesy of a 15-foot par putt at the 72nd hole. “With three holes to go, I felt like I was in control of the tournament,” admitted Mickelson afterwards. “It's been a disappointing day for me.”
