As winter approaches, be sure to keep golf at the forefront of your mind with these pointers on how you can improve from your living room!

Clean your grips

Don’t underestimate how important it is to have clean grips and the difference they can make to your game. Often neglected by club golfers, simple golf grip cleaning will help restore surface tack, prevent hand slipping and ensure you’re using an ideal light pressure grip.

And now, thanks to the colourful nature of grips, oils and grime are easier to spot than ever before. Cleaning is easy, too. All you need is a bucket of warm water, a small amount of mild detergent, a dishcloth and a dry towel. Once you’ve finished washing your grips, rinse them with water again to make sure all the detergent is removed. After that, you’re good to go.

Master Putting

Master putting

Messing about with your putter in the house is natural for any golfer, but what would happen if you took it a bit more seriously and practised with an end goal in mind?

You don’t need to set up a target, although a mug works well. All you need to do is focus on improving your putting stroke. Working on your putting in the house can pay dividends out on the course. It’s a win-win for all levels of golfer.

Work on set-up

By Scott Clark, Director of Golf at Prestonfield GC.

Taking advantage of technology is a great way to help with learning. But filming your swing from the wrong place can lead to problems. The most effective way to get someone to photograph your swing is in a ’down the line’ position.

Four key points to remember:

  1. The camera should be at hand height and be in a direct line behind them. This position gives you the most accurate reflection of your swing and makes it easier to keep track of any changes that you’re working on.
  2. Be consistent and record from the same position.
  3. Seek professional advice about your technique before changing anything – use video as a tool to assist in learning rather than confusing the issue.
  4. Don’t become obsessed with viewing your technique all the time. It’s more beneficial to view it occasionally to see results.

Keep better connected

By Steve Johnston, PGA professional at Peebles GC.

This is something I do to try and get the feeling of staying connected at the start of the swing. Put a finger on your sternum with your left hand. The idea is to keep the same distance between your right elbow and the centre of your chest as you turn.

This encourages the body and the arms to work as one. You don’t want the arms to get away from the body at this point because that reduces your shoulder turn, so the drill keeps the same distance between your right elbow and sternum.

If your right elbow gets away from that position, you’re not going to turn your shoulders. What you’re doing is basically just lifting the club up. Then, you’ll either come down from the inside or drop it from the outside. The idea is to try and keep it all as one.
