One of the most unique events in the history of the PGA Tour is set to be revived in 2025.

After a 17-year hiatus, The Skins Game will return on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving in the United States.

It was announced on Thursday by Chad Mumm, the executive producer of Netflix’s Full Swing, with his company, Pro Shop, behind the comeback.

In partnership with the PGA Tour, Pro Shop will produce the unofficial money event that was halted in 2008 after LG dropped out as title sponsor.

Originally running in November or December, The Skins Game debuted in 1983 and was most recently held at the Indian Wells Golf Resort in California.

Details of the event are yet to be confirmed, but Chris Wandell, an executive at the Tour and board member of Pro Shop, explained the deal.

“Reimagining an iconic event like The Skins Game in a retro-modern way that engages today’s sports fans is exactly why the PGA Tour has partnered with Pro Shop,” said Wandell.

“We look forward to seeing how the newest iteration of The Skins Game unfolds as Pro Shop and Propagate identify cast, format and creative approach.”

The PGA Tour, which was never in the driving seat of the event, will own the rights to the event but hand over distribution to Pro Shop.

Only four golfers were invited to each year’s edition of the made-for-TV match, and they’d win individual holes – or ‘skins’ – in match play.

Each hole was assigned a different monetary value and whoever won the hole subsequently won the money for that hole.

Fred Couples earned the nickname “Mr Skins” because of his dominance in the event. He won $4,405,000 and 77 skins in 11 appearances, as well as five of The Skins Games events.

Meanwhile, it was revived in 2018 but transformed into The Match, which has been a staple of the golf calendar since.

While not a direct continuation of The Match, Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler will face Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau in a similar event next week.

The Crypto.com Showdown is set to take place in Las Vegas on December 17 – and pay the winners in cryptocurrency.
