Inaugural Foundations Cup to be hosted by Scots stars this September

Strong foundations: Stephen Gallacher and Paul Lawrie with the Foundations Cup, which will be contested this autumn

Stephen Gallacher and Paul Lawrie today swapped roles with the business world to announce the launch of The Foundations Cup, a two day Ryder-Cup style event taking place for the first time at The Renaissance Club from September 19-20 this year.

The competition will see the two European Tour stalwarts lead their respective Foundation teams – made up of prominent business people and Foundation supporters – in fourballs on day one followed by a round of singles matches, where Gallacher and Lawrie will also go head-to-head, on the Friday. A gala dinner on Thursday evening will punctuate proceedings.

The Stephen Gallacher Foundation was launched last year following the massive success that Lawrie has had with his own Foundation in the North East going back to 2001.
This represents the first time that the two Foundations have come together with the common goal of raising funds to support their activities.

Former Open champion and Ryder Cup star Lawrie said: “I have been delighted to help Stephen get his foundation off the ground and hopefully some of the experiences that Marian and I have encountered, both good and bad, that I have shared with Stephen across the dinner table at various events over the years on tour has helped Stephen, Helen and his team get off to a flying start.

“This new competition makes great sense as a way of raising funds as well as injecting a bit of competition and fun and, as long as we win, everything will be alright!”

Gallacher, who won his second European Tour title at the Dubai Desert Classic this year, added: “It has given me enormous pleasure and satisfaction getting my foundation going and I can’t thank Paul enough for his invaluable support.
“We look forward to having the two foundations work together where possible but, in the first instance, I look forward to lifting The Foundations Cup in September on behalf of my guys!”
