Sergio Garcia believes his current form doesn’t deserve a spot on Ryder Cup team
Sergio Garcia has hit out at his recent form – saying it doesn’t merit one of Colin Montgomerie’s three wildcard picks, never mind automatic qualification.
The 30-year-old, who has played in every Ryder Cup event since becoming the tournament’s youngest ever player at the age of 19 in 1999, has plummeted from second to 32nd in the world in just over a year and has been starved of a top three finish for almost 19 months. Form Garcia believes is simply not good enough for the Ryder Cup.
“If it was right now I would probably talk to Monty and tell him what I am feeling. I would only accept to go if I felt that I was the best choice.
“It’s the team that counts and if I thought that any other player could do a better job than me I would certainly decline.”
However, the concession does not mean that Garcia is giving up on making the team. With four months left until the event at Celtic Manor from October 1 to 3, Garcia is fully focussed on doing all he can to make the team on merit.
“At present I don’t think that I am the best choice, but we still have a few months to go and hopefully things will change,” he said. “I hope he does not need to pick me!
“I feel like I am getting better. My putting definitely is, but I’ve been struggling with my ball-striking and when that happens the alarm sirens go because I’ve always been a good ball striker.”
