Three top golfers and the Open Championship were among the prize-winners during a highly successful night for the sport at the star-studded Sunday Mail sports awards.

Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie was presented with a lifetime achievement award, while Ricoh Women’s British Open winner Catriona Matthew and double Scottish champion David Law also shared the spotlight.

The Open, staged at Turnberry, meanwhile picked up the event of the year title.

Monty took to the stage amid a rapturous applause and said: “There’s great promise for Scottish sport and I must congratulate every award winner tonight.

“We should be very proud of all the talent that remains here in Scotland.”

Aberdonian starlet David Law, who became the first golfer to win both the Scottish Boys’ and Men’s Amateur titles in the same year, collected the Amateur Performance Award. “This has been an amazing night,” said the youngster.

Catriona Matthew, meanwhile, won the Sports Personality of the Year in recognition of becoming the first Scottish woman to lift a major golf title when she took the Ricoh British Women’s Open back in August, only 11 weeks after giving birth to her second child.
