Jeffrey Guan, the Australian youngster tipped for big things in the game, has been released from hospital following a freak accident during a golf event.

The 20-year-old was struck in the face with a ball while competing in a pro-am at the NSW Open near Sydney, which, according to Australian Golf Digest, fractured Guan’s eye-socket in multiple places.

Guan had just returned home from California, where he had made his PGA Tour debut at the Procore Championship. His coach, Paul Davis, told the publication: “It’s truly awful. This was actually the first pro-am Jeff has ever played in. It’s just the worst possible news after such an amazing week in California.”

He was immediately flown to Sydney Eye Hospital for emergency surgery amid fears he could lose his eyesight.

Now, In a joint statement released by Golf Australia, the PGA of Australia, and Golf NSW, it was confirmed that Guan has now been discharged.

It added: “While he is no longer under constant medical supervision, there is still no clear timeline for his recovery, and the long-term prognosis remains uncertain at this stage.

“Jeff’s recovery is only just beginning, and it is expected to be a long and challenging journey.

“[We] remain mindful of the community’s ongoing concern following his recent on-course accident. The three organisations continue to maintain close daily contact with Jeffrey’s family, offering support as they navigate the challenges ahead.

“We are dedicated to ensuring that Jeffrey receives the best possible medical care and that his family is assisted in every way during this difficult time.

“Once again, we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone for their ongoing messages of kindness and support and will continue to provide updates on Jeffrey’s progress as appropriate.”

It is yet unclear as to whether Guan will regain vision in his eye, or when he can resume his fledgling career.
