Graeme McDowell has been handed a one-tournament suspension by LIV Golf after violating the league’s anti-doping policy.
McDowell has been suspended for next week’s $25million event at Greenbrier after it was determined he had used a “decongestant medicine that included a banned substance” during LIV Golf’s event in Nashville from June 21-23.
The banned substance in question is R-methamphetamine (levo-methamphetamine).

McDowell will be hit with a $125,000 fine and the results of the Northern Irishman and his team in Nashville will be disqualified. He will be able to return for the following LIV event in Chicago from September 13-15.
The former US Open champion has already taken to social media to give his version of the events that led to his suspension.
“Ahead of LIV Nashville, I was struggling with severe congestion that was affecting my sleep,” he wrote in a statement on X. “In an effort to manage it, I used a generic Vick’s nasal decongestant without realising it might be on the banned list.”

“As a professional golfer, I understand the importance of checking all medications and the option to apply for a Theraputic Use Exemption (TUE). Unfortunately I did not think to do this due to the over the counter nature of this medicine, and I deeply regret the oversight. I fully accept the sanctions imposed by LIV.
“LIV’s Anti-Doping Policy is designed to be thorough and transparent. Unlike some other tours, LIV forces these rules rigorously, which made the situation particularly challenging for me. However, I respect the need for these rules and penalties – they are essential for maintaining the integrity of the sport.”
“I’m proud of my 22-year career and the way I’ve conducted myself throughout it. Now, I’m focused on moving forward and getting back on the golf course. I look forward to seeing everyone at LIV Golf Chicago!”
McDowell plays on Brooks Koepka’s Smash GC team and is currently 23rd in LIV’s individual standings. His replacement for LIV’s event at Greenbrier has yet to be confirmed.
